La Palma upgraded to rain alert
The Government of the Canary Islands, through its Directorate-General for Emergencies, has updated the situation and raised the pre-alert activated this morning to an alert for rain in the north and east of La Palma, effective from 2pm this Thursday, 1 October.
The decision, it said, was taken in line with information provided by the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) alongside other available sources, and under the terms of the Canary Islands’ Specific Emergency Plan for Adverse Weather Risks (PEFMA).
Persistent downpours expected
An episode of persistent rainfall has been flagged, locally heavy or very heavy, affecting in particular the northern and eastern inland areas of the island. Rainfall is already producing significant accumulations and is expected to continue through the afternoon and into tonight, with totals of up to 150mm (150 litres per square metre) in 12 hours. Locally and at times, more than 180mm (180 litres per mΒ²) could fall within 12 hours, and higher totals may build up over longer periods in areas where the rain proves most persistent.
A gradual easing in intensity is expected during the early hours of the morning, although the rain will continue. The cloud band is moving very slowly from north to south, with a north-easterly flow at low levels, favouring the persistence of the rainfall.
Ongoing monitoring and safety advice
The situation will continue to be monitored in line with how the rainfall develops, its effects on the ground and updates from Aemet. The public is urged to follow the self-protection advice issued by the Directorate-General for Emergencies.
