Urgent approval for 26 protected homes in Gáldar

The Department of Public Works, Housing and Mobility of the Government of the Canary Islands, through the Canary Islands Housing Institute (ICAVI), has announced that it has now declared urgent the processing of the file for the execution of a second development of 26 publicly promoted protected homes and 26 parking spaces in Gáldar, on Gran Canaria.

According to a statement, the development will be located on plot M-19 in El Roque, at numbers 94-102 on Calle José de Sosa, and has an estimated value of €5,073,538.31. It forms part of a project that envisages the construction of 126 publicly promoted protected homes across three municipalities of Gran Canaria, 52 of them in Gáldar.

Funded by EU Next Generation money

The homes are included in Programme 6 of aid for the construction of social rental housing in energy-efficient buildings, under the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, financed by the European Union through Next Generation EU funds. The programme aims to encourage and increase the public stock of energy-efficient housing earmarked for social or affordable rent.

The estimated value of the contracts as a whole amounts to €26,258,717.45, excluding IGIC, and is financed by the Canary Islands Housing Institute, the Gran Canaria Housing Consortium and PRTR funds from the Spanish government.

126 homes across Gran Canaria

The 26 homes on plot M-19 in El Roque form part of an overall project that envisages the construction of 126 publicly promoted protected homes on Gran Canaria. In Gáldar, the contract covers two plots destined for separate housing developments, one of them designed using industrialised construction processes.

The package of works also includes a development of 45 homes in Santa María de Guía, 21 homes in Casa Pastores and a further eight on Calle Severo Ochoa, both in Santa Lucía de Tirajana.

Pressure over housing after island protests

Following the housing protests, with encampments on Gran Canaria, Tenerife and Lanzarote, the CC-PP government has now also made a move with regard to the declaration of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria as a stressed area.
