Four earthquakes recorded across the Canary Islands

The National Geographic Institute (IGN) recorded four earthquakes of magnitude 1.5 or higher across the Canary Islands this Saturday. The strongest tremor, measuring 2.3, occurred at 00:11 hours in the Atlantic Ocean, north of Tenerife, at a depth of 11 kilometres.

Tremors in Tenerife, Gran Canaria and the Atlantic

The remaining earthquakes were located in Santiago del Teide, Agaete and a third also at sea. The Santiago del Teide tremor (04:18 hours) had a magnitude of 1.7 at a depth of 26 kilometres; the one in the ocean (09:13 hours) was also 1.7 at a depth of 18 kilometres; and the Agaete quake (14:36 hours) measured 1.6 at a depth of four kilometres.

How to report a tremor

If you felt any of these earthquakes, the IGN has a questionnaire on its website where you can provide details about the event. On their list of earthquakes of magnitude 3 or higher – or those felt by the population – in the Iberian Peninsula and Canary Islands area over the last 10 days, you can find a link by clicking on the specific tremor you experienced, or go directly to the questionnaire if reporting a new one.

Earthquake safety advice from the IGN

Although earthquakes in the islands are not usually particularly strong, it is worth being prepared and knowing how to act in such a situation. To this end, the IGN offers a series of tips on what to do during an earthquake:

  • Drop, cover under a table and hold on to it
  • Stay calm and keep your balance as much as possible
  • If indoors, move away from furniture, windows and lamps
  • If outdoors, keep away from buildings, walls and electricity poles
  • If driving, stop in a safe place, turn on hazard lights and remain inside the vehicle
  • If using a wheelchair, brake in a safe place and protect your head with your arms
  • If in a crowded place, protect your head with your arms and take shelter under seats and tables
