El Trompas charged over the murder of Claudia Tacoronte
The prosecutor’s office of the Mexican state of Morelos (central Mexico) reported on Friday that a judge has charged Francisco Javier, known as El Trompas, identified as the probable person responsible for the murder of the young Canarian student Claudia Tacoronte, which took place on 12 September.
The decision was announced in a statement shared by the local prosecutor’s office itself, following a public review hearing scheduled for 16:00 local time (22:00 GMT), which was delayed by an hour because of the transfer of the accused to the court in the city of Cuautla in the state of Morelos.
Pre-trial detention and four months for the investigation
Judge Alma Patricia Sala Ruiz ruled that the defendant had committed the offences of degrading injuries and exposure in a public place, and therefore also ordered that the detainee be held in pre-trial detention and granted four months for the conclusion of the supplementary investigation.
The ruling came on the same day that the Morelos prosecutor’s office handed over the body of the Spanish student to Tacoronte’s family for repatriation, a day after the arrest of Francisco Javier.
Prosecutors seek up to 70 years for femicide
The Morelos prosecutor’s office had announced that it would charge the alleged perpetrator with femicide and seek a sentence of 70 years in prison, the maximum provided for under state legislation, because of the way in which the young woman was killed.
The state attorney general of Morelos, Fernando Blumenkron Escobar, said at the time that the detainee had stolen Tacoronte’s mobile phone, but explained that the characteristics of her injuries and the manner in which she was attacked allowed the prosecutor’s office to maintain the femicide charge.
He also ruled out that the crime had a sexual component, as some accounts had suggested, and announced further investigations to locate evidence related to the case, including Tacoronte’s mobile phone and the weapon used in the attack.
A 21-year-old student from Santa Brígida
Claudia Tacoronte, a 21-year-old Canarian from Santa Brígida in Gran Canaria, was killed with a bladed weapon on Saturday 12 September in Cuautla.
She had arrived in Mexico in mid-August to take part in an academic exchange between the University of Granada and the Autonomous University of the State of Morelos (UAEM).
Fourth UAEM student killed in seven months
The murder has caused outrage both inside and outside Mexico after it emerged that Tacoronte is the fourth UAEM student killed in barely seven months, following the cases of Kimberly Ramos, Karol Toledo and Michelle Itzayana Fuentes, which had already sparked protests and student walkouts.
