British tourist, 88, dies after violent robbery in Tenerife

British tourist dies after birthday robbery in Tenerife

An 88-year-old British tourist has died in Tenerife after being violently robbed while celebrating his birthday with his 79-year-old wife in Los Cristianos, in the south of the island. The man had been in hospital in a very serious condition since last Wednesday, after falling to the ground during a struggle with his attacker.

Attack at apartment complex entrance

The attack took place at the entrance of the Victoria Court II apartment complex, an area frequented by foreign residents and regular visitors. According to reports published by British newspaper The Daily Mail, the assailant attempted to rob the victim, and during the struggle, the man fell backwards, striking his head violently against the ground. The victim suffered a cardiac arrest following the impact. Emergency services managed to resuscitate him at the scene before transferring him to hospital in a critical condition. He fought for his life for several days but ultimately died in the medical facility.

Outpouring of grief and tributes

The news has prompted an outpouring of grief among friends, neighbours, and tourists who knew the couple. Flowers have been laid outside the building where the assault took place in memory of the deceased. One bouquet bore the message: “RIP, We Will Miss You.” The case has caused particular shock because the man was in Tenerife celebrating his birthday with his wife. An acquaintance recounted on social media that he had seen him just two weeks earlier at the Big Ben Pub in Los Cristianos. “He was celebrating his birthday with his wife and having a great time. He was a lovely man. I can’t believe this has happened. Rest in peace,” he wrote. Another friend also called for justice, describing him as “a lovely man.”

Suspect identified but no arrests yet

According to information released, the suspect has been identified as a man with previous convictions for similar offences. No arrests have been made so far, although cited sources suggest the police may provide updates shortly.

Safety concerns among residents and tourists

The case has reignited concern among foreign residents and regular tourists in Tenerife, who report a rise in violent robberies in certain areas of the south of the island. Some users of expat groups have pointed out that this is not an isolated incident. One said he knows of at least four similar incidents in the same area over the last three months. He also recounted the case of a woman in her 80s, in a wheelchair, who allegedly had a chain ripped from her neck in broad daylight. Residents and visitors are calling for a greater police presence and a firmer response to such crimes.

Recent spate of violent incidents in Tenerife

The death of the British tourist adds to a series of recent incidents in tourist areas of southern Tenerife. In April, police arrested a young Moroccan man accused of sexually assaulting a British tourist and, on the same day, robbing and assaulting an elderly British couple. In February, an 18-year-old British man was seriously injured after being stabbed in Las Verónicas while trying to retrieve a mobile phone stolen from a friend. And on 28 May, another British man died following a fight in the same nightlife area.
