New chapter for Tenerife’s links with Canada
The launch of direct air connections with Canada has ushered in a new era for Tenerife’s tourism and commercial relations with the North American country. An institutional and business delegation from the Island has met with Air Canada executives, tour operators and representatives of various economic organisations in Montreal to explore business opportunities. The meeting coincides with a reception for the new routes that the company describes as exceptional: according to the airline, Tenerife ranks among its most successful launches in new markets.
The assessment comes from Alexandre Lefèvre, Air Canada’s Vice-President of Network Planning and Global Sales, who highlighted the high volume of bookings recorded for flights from Toronto and Montreal. “We are extremely satisfied with the reception our new services have received,” he said. The company has decided to extend the Montreal connection into the summer, which will allow direct flights with Tenerife to be maintained throughout the year, although the Toronto route will be concentrated in the winter season.
First flights touch down on the Island
The first direct flight from Toronto landed at Tenerife South airport last Monday, 26 October, at 9.10am, marking the start of Air Canada’s operations with the Island. The second connection will be launched this coming Saturday, 31 October, with the arrival of the first aircraft from Montreal. Between the two routes there will be four flights a week during the winter and three in summer, when only the Montreal service will be maintained. The new links will also make it easier to travel to other destinations in Canada, the United States, the Caribbean and Latin America through the airline’s network.
Trade mission builds on new air corridor
The opening of this air corridor has served as the starting point for a trade mission organised by Turismo de Tenerife and Air Canada in Montreal. At the company’s headquarters, representatives of both territories discussed ways to expand tourism exchanges and establish contacts between businesses. The aim is to take advantage of the new accessibility to consolidate Tenerife’s presence in Canada and open up possibilities for collaboration that go beyond the arrival of visitors.
The Tenerife delegation was led by the chief executive of Turismo de Tenerife, Dimple Melwani, and included Jorge Marichal, president of the hoteliers’ association for the province of Tenerife (Ashotel); Victoria González, vice-president of the Chamber of Commerce of Santa Cruz de Tenerife; Fedua El Gheriani, director of Isla Bella Resorts, and José Fernando Cabrera, chief executive and owner of Luxury Tenerife Hotels. Air Canada was represented by Lefèvre and by heads of business development and sales. Also taking part were representatives of the Spanish Tourist Office in Toronto, the Chamber of Commerce of Metropolitan Montreal, Montreal City Council and the tourism section of the Spanish Embassy, as well as travel agencies, hotel companies and specialist media. Among the operators were Voyages Traditours, Wingbuddy, Sportvac Voyages and Voyages Endirect.
Promotion and new business alliances
Melwani believes the new connections offer an opportunity to expand the promotion and marketing work Tenerife has been carrying out in Canada and the United States for years. The tourism chief stressed that the meeting allowed direct contacts to be established with the airline and with professionals from the Canadian sector, as well as identifying possible commercial alliances that could translate into activity for businesses on the Island.
The agenda is not limited to holiday tourism. Turismo de Tenerife lists the audiovisual industry, meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions tourism, and cruises among the areas with potential for collaboration. The intention is to use the connectivity to diversify economic relations and encourage exchanges between companies in both markets, although no specific agreements arising from the meetings have been announced so far.
Long-stay travellers and year-round access
The vice-president of the Cabildo and island councillor for Tourism, Lope Afonso, links the arrival of Air Canada with the work carried out over years to bring the North American market into Tenerife’s network of connections. In his view, the direct links open up new opportunities to attract travellers interested in longer stays and in an offer combining nature, culture and tourism services.
From the airline’s side, Lefèvre also highlighted the collaboration maintained with Turismo de Tenerife and the support received during the preparation of the routes. That response, he argues, contributed to the decision to extend the Montreal operation beyond the winter. The new schedule will allow the Island to retain a direct gateway to the Canadian market during the summer months too, when the Toronto flights will stop operating.
