Air Canada launches Tenerife flights from Toronto and Montreal

Air Canada has begun operating flights to Tenerife through its new connections with Toronto and Montreal, strengthening the island’s international connectivity and opening new routes to attract visitors from Canada and other North American markets. The island government (Cabildo) highlighted the importance of the new route for the tourism sector in a statement issued on Wednesday.

The launch of these routes forms part of Tenerife’s market diversification strategy and consolidates its commitment to North America as a priority market, both for its growth potential and for the profile of traveller interested in quality experiences, longer stays and a distinctive tourism offering, the Cabildo added.

First flight lands at Tenerife South

The first flight from Toronto landed at Tenerife South airport at 9.10am on Monday, and a few hours later the aircraft set off on its return journey to Canada carrying a delegation of island representatives from both the public and private sectors. Specifically, there will be four flights a week in winter and three in summer. The Toronto connection will operate during the winter season, while the Montreal route will begin on 31 October and expand its operation during the summer, in line with the schedule announced by the airline, the Cabildo explained.

A milestone for international connectivity

Lope Afonso, vice-president and tourism minister of the Cabildo de Tenerife, stressed the importance of this new connectivity for the island’s “international strategy”. “The arrival of Air Canada in Tenerife represents a milestone for the island’s international connectivity and the culmination of years of work to open up new opportunities with a strategic market such as North America,” he said.

Afonso also underlined that these direct connections reinforce the island’s positioning “as a global, competitive and quality destination” and, in his view, allow progress towards a tourism model based on “diversification, sustainability and attracting visitors who value authenticity, culture and excellence in the island’s offering”.

Promotion work in Canada and the United States

Dimple Melwani, CEO of Turismo de Tenerife, highlighted both the importance of the new air connections and the promotional and commercial work carried out in Canada and the United States. “The arrival of Air Canada is an opportunity to continue positioning Tenerife in North America, a market we have been working on for years through promotional and communication activities,” she commented.

Melwani also praised the meeting held in Montreal with representatives of the airline and the Canadian tourism and business industry. “It has been a very important meeting for Tenerife, in which we had the opportunity to share a working space with Air Canada executives, representatives of the Toronto tourist office (OET), businesspeople and professionals from the tourism sector, as well as representatives of the Chamber of Commerce. This meeting allows us to strengthen relations, reinforce collaboration between both markets and establish new commercial alliances that can translate into business opportunities for Tenerife companies and the island’s economy,” she said.

The CEO of Turismo de Tenerife insisted that connectivity must be accompanied by active promotion, communication and commercial work to take advantage of the potential of the Canadian and wider North American market. In this regard, she highlighted the appeal of the island’s offering and pointed to Tenerife’s potential in strategic areas such as the audiovisual industry, MICE tourism and cruise tourism. These sectors offer new opportunities to “diversify economic activity” (while remaining within the tourism sector), attract higher value-added visitors and foster synergies between Canadian and island companies, the Cabildo explained.

Melwani also highlighted the good relationship maintained with Air Canada since the start of negotiations, as well as the work carried out jointly with Turismo de Tenerife to organise the Montreal business meeting and prepare future meetings to consolidate collaboration between both markets.

Airline reports exceptionally high bookings

Alexandre Lefèvre, Air Canada’s vice-president of network planning and global sales, said they were “extremely satisfied” with the reception given to the new services from Montreal and Toronto to Tenerife. “Booking volumes have been exceptionally high, making Tenerife one of our most successful launches in new markets. This momentum, together with the enormous support and involvement we have received from our partner Turismo de Tenerife, the Cabildo and the local community, gives us great confidence in this destination. We are delighted to consolidate this success by establishing a permanent presence in Tenerife throughout the year, with the continuation of our Montreal route into the summer,” he commented.

Island delegation visits Canada

To coincide with the start of the new connections, a Tenerife delegation led by Turismo de Tenerife CEO Dimple Melwani and part of her team travelled to Canada to hold meetings with representatives of the tourism and business industry and explore new opportunities for commercial collaboration. The mission included Jorge Marichal, president of Ashotel and CEHAT; Victoria González, vice-president of the Santa Cruz de Tenerife Chamber of Commerce; Fedua El Gheriani, director of Isla Bella Resorts; and José Fernando Cabrera, CEO and owner of Luxury Tenerife Hotels.

The island delegation held a business meeting in Montreal at Air Canada’s headquarters with airline executives, institutional representatives and leading professionals from the Canadian tourism and business sectors. The meeting aimed to strengthen commercial relations between both markets and drive new opportunities for collaboration. Air Canada was represented by Alexandre Lefèvre, vice-president of network planning and global sales, along with heads of business development and corporate, regional, global and specialist sales.

Also present at the meeting were Isabel Garcia, director of the Toronto tourist office (OET); representatives of the Chamber of Commerce of Metropolitan Montreal, the tourism affairs consulate of the Spanish Embassy in Montreal and the market development and sustainability division of Montreal City Council; as well as associations, travel agencies, hotel companies and specialist media from Canada. Among them were the Canadian Automobile Association (CAA-Quebec), agencies Voyages Traditours, Wingbuddy, Sportvac Voyages and Voyages Endirect, the Meliá Hotels International Canada chain and the tourism-specialist media outlet PAX News.

The meeting was organised jointly by Turismo de Tenerife and Air Canada with the aim of strengthening commercial ties, encouraging the exchange of knowledge and exploring new opportunities for collaboration. The new routes will make it easier for passengers travelling from Tenerife to connect to a wide network of destinations in Canada, the United States, the Caribbean, Central America and South America, thanks to the connection options Air Canada offers from its main operating hubs.
