EMALSA will begin the reorganisation of traffic on Avenida Rafael Cabrera and in the surrounding area of the Teatro Pérez Galdós in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria on the night of Monday 12 October, in order to carry out work forming part of the first phase of emergency repairs to the damage caused to the sewer feeding the Teatro wastewater pumping station (EBAR) by the low-pressure system ‘Therese’.
Lane closures and temporary bus station relocation
According to a press release from the city council, this phase includes changes to the lanes — Rafael Cabrera will go from three to two between Miguel de Cervantes and Pilarillo Seco — and to signage, as well as preparations for the temporary relocation of the Guaguas Municipales bus station.
The council says this new layout will adapt traffic flows and public transport stops to the road space required by the works, after heavy rain in March partially damaged this pipeline, which carries more than 80% of the wastewater generated daily in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
The reorganisation and signage work is scheduled to take place between 12 and 17 October, from 22.00 to 06.00, with the changes on the road becoming noticeable from Tuesday 13 October, after the first night of work.
The Teatro Guaguas Municipales station will remain in normal operation until Sunday 18 October inclusive, although from Monday 19 October the stops and the start and end points of the routes operating at the station will be temporarily split between two locations: the right-hand side of Avenida Rafael Cabrera, between Munguía and Pilarillo Seco streets, and the existing stops at the Mercado de Vegueta.
New lane layout and parking changes
As a result, Rafael Cabrera will go from three to two general traffic lanes. A bus-taxi lane will be provided on its right-hand side and, next to the pavement, a fourth lane reserved for the regulation of Guaguas Municipales services. This last lane will accommodate the stops and waiting areas for buses between services, separated from the lane used by buses and taxis.
As for parking spaces on the left-hand side of the avenue, these will be reorganised to provide loading and unloading zones, motorcycle parking and reserved spaces for people with reduced mobility and pharmacies. This layout will allow the needs of shops and users to be met during the works.
The affected taxi rank on Miguel de Cervantes street will be moved to Munguía street, in the section between Rafael Cabrera and Avenida Marítima.
Alternative route around the Teatro Pérez Galdós
Works on Francisco Jareño street will maintain the restriction on turning around the Teatro Pérez Galdós from Losero and Francisco Gourié streets towards the GC-110. The currently established alternative route will therefore remain in service. Vehicles must continue along Avenida Rafael Cabrera, join the GC-1 southbound and take the exit leading to the monument to Benito Pérez Galdós.
EMALSA and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria City Council therefore ask drivers and public transport users to pay particular attention to signage during this phase. Both organisations thank the public for their understanding and cooperation in the face of any inconvenience the works may cause.
