Gran Canaria stadium revamp set for World Cup 2030
The contracting committee of the Sports Institute of the Gran Canaria Cabildo has proposed awarding the renovation of the island’s stadium for the 2030 World Cup to the companies OHLA and Sando, which have committed to carrying out the work for €206.3 million (€192.8 million plus IGIC), €28.5 million below the tender budget of €234.8 million.
Works could begin by late November
According to the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, which owns the stadium, OHLA and Sando are proposing a 30-month timetable to complete the works, which would make the sports infrastructure available a year before the World Cup kicks off. The proposed award is still provisional, the island authority stresses, adding that none of the three groups bidding for the contract submitted abnormally low offers.
With the opening and assessment of all the envelopes corresponding to the contracting procedure now complete, the file is moving on to its next administrative steps, with the contract expected to be formalised by the end of November, from which point the works could get under way.
Major changes to the stadium
The project envisages significant interventions at the sports venue, including the demolition of several structures that must be replaced in order to carry out the stadium’s new configuration, as well as the subsequent installation of new elements and the fitting of the roof.
Three business groups bid for the renovation of the Gran Canaria stadium, which was left vacant before the summer in a first tender: OHLA with Sando; Ferrovial, with San José e Iniciativas Canarias; and Sacyr with Construplan and Bitumex.
