Rain pre-alert declared across five islands

The Directorate General for Emergencies of the Canary Islands has declared a pre-alert for rain on El Hierro, La Palma, La Gomera, Tenerife and Gran Canaria from midday this Tuesday, 6 October. The decision was taken in line with information provided by the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) alongside other available sources, and in application of the Canary Islands Specific Emergency Plan for Adverse Meteorological Phenomena (PEFMA), according to the regional government.

Tropical humidity and relief could fuel downpours

Intense rainfall is expected on the central islands and El Hierro, associated with high tropical humidity and possible convection mechanisms favoured by the terrain. The heaviest showers are likely to make themselves felt particularly during the afternoons and into the early hours, without ruling out the occasional thunderstorm.

Up to 40mm in 12 hours on Gran Canaria

Intense rainfall of up to 20mm in an hour is also forecast, affecting Gran Canaria — mainly in the summits and mid-altitude areas of the north and east — as well as Tenerife and El Hierro, where it would fall principally in mid-altitude and high areas of the north, north-east and south. In these same areas, rainfall could also prove persistent, with accumulations of up to 40mm in 12 hours on Gran Canaria, according to the AEMET warning.

Less likely on La Palma and La Gomera

Finally, there will be rain in the mid-altitude areas of the north and east of La Palma, as well as in mid-altitude and high areas of the north of La Gomera, although on these islands the likelihood of rainfall reaching the high intensities mentioned above is lower.
