Tenerife activates Grado 2 fire restrictions amid heatwave

Grado 2 restrictions activated

The Cabildo of Tenerife activated Grado 2 wildfire prevention measures from 8:00am this Saturday in response to the extreme heat episode affecting the island, which could bring temperatures of up to 38°C. The restrictions will remain in force until further notice and affect numerous activities in Tenerife’s forests. These are the main prohibitions that residents and visitors should bear in mind over the coming days.

Recreational areas closed

With Grado 2 now in effect, staying in all recreational areas, camping zones and campsites located in the countryside is prohibited. The aim is to reduce the presence of people in forest areas to a minimum while the high risk of fire persists. Motor vehicles will not be allowed to use the network of forest tracks when the journey is for recreational purposes. This restriction seeks to reduce the chance of any incident sparking a fire at a time of particular danger.

Events and activities suspended

The measures also suspend the holding of street parties, sporting events and any other activities that take place along forest tracks, footpaths or cross-country routes. The ban on lighting barbecues, bonfires, stoves or gas cookers outdoors remains in force. Any activity involving fire in forest areas or near the countryside is likewise prohibited.

The use of tools and machinery that could produce sparks, such as brush cutters, angle grinders or welding equipment, is suspended, as are forestry operations. The use of fireworks and any other pyrotechnic material is prohibited in areas considered to be at risk of fire. Smoking is not permitted in recreational areas, camping zones, campsites, forest tracks, footpaths, viewpoints or any other public infrastructure located in the countryside.

Public health advice

In addition to the restrictions, the Cabildo recommends avoiding outdoor activities during the central hours of the day, staying well hydrated, wearing light clothing and sunscreen, and paying particular attention to children, the elderly and those with chronic illnesses, who are most vulnerable to high temperatures.

With these measures, the island corporation aims to minimise the risk of wildfires during an exceptional weather episode that will keep temperatures very high in various parts of Tenerife throughout this weekend.
