Fuerteventura demands urgent restoration of Cádiz ferry line
The president of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, Lola García (CC), has called on the Minister for Territorial Policy and Democratic Memory, Ángel Víctor Torres, to support the recovery of the maritime link with mainland Spain, following the suspension of the service connecting the island with Cádiz.
Joint appeal to the minister
During the minister’s visit to inspect housing renovation works in Corralejo and El Cotillo, in the municipality of La Oliva, García handed Torres the agreement signed by the institutions of Fuerteventura (Majorero institutions) to demand, as a united front, that the direct sea route between the island and the mainland be declared a public interest service.
The Cabildo explained in a statement that the agreement was signed on 20 July by the island corporation, the local councils and the Chamber of Commerce, in response to the state’s unilateral suspension of this strategic service.
Sensitive to a peripheral economy
García emphasised that, despite having already held telephone conversations with the minister on the matter, she wanted to take advantage of his presence on the island to deliver first-hand a matter of state competence that worries the people and institutions of Fuerteventura, and to urge him to intervene with the relevant authorities at the Ministry of Transport and Mobility.
The Cabildo also noted that the Ministry of Transport and Mobility is currently working on a preliminary study to draft the specifications for a new tender. “Now is the time to act and adopt a joint position,” the statement said.
“I am sure the minister will act with sensitivity towards an issue that directly affects an island and peripheral economy like Fuerteventura,” García concluded.
