Tremor felt in Güímar
The National Geographic Institute (IGN) recorded a 3.1 magnitude earthquake (mbLg) on Monday afternoon between the islands of Gran Canaria and Tenerife, which was felt by residents with intensity II in the Tenerife municipality of Güímar.
Details of the quake
According to the IGN website, the tremor was recorded at around 5.57pm (Canary Islands time), at a depth of 27 kilometres, with its epicentre in the Atlantic Ocean. The National Geographic Institute frequently registers seismic activity in this area, although in most cases it is not felt by the population and causes no damage.
Larger event earlier this year
However, in February of this year, the IGN recorded a 4.1 magnitude earthquake (mbLg) between the two islands, which was felt by the population with intensity III. On that occasion, the quake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometres, according to IGN sensors, and was felt in various municipalities of Gran Canaria and Tenerife with a maximum intensity of III-IV.
