La Gran Manzana: a new sustainable shopping centre opens in Tenerife

Official opening of La Gran Manzana

La Gran Manzana shopping centre held its official opening ceremony today, with public representatives, business leaders, retailers, and the media all in attendance to welcome a project set to become one of the Canary Islands’ leading destinations for shopping, leisure, and sustainability. Located in Las Chafiras, in the municipality of San Miguel de Abona, La Gran Manzana begins operations as the area’s first major shopping centre and one of the most significant private projects to have been developed in southern Tenerife in recent years. Its launch provides a major boost to the local economy, creates jobs, and establishes a new retail and service offering for both residents and visitors.

A ceremonial start

The inauguration was attended by the Mayor of San Miguel de Abona, Arturo E. González Hernández, alongside members of the town council, institutional representatives, business leaders, and executives from the various brands now operating within the new complex. The official opening was marked by a traditional ribbon-cutting ceremony, led by brothers Juan Jesús Hernandez Perez and José Ignacio Hernandez Perez, owners of Comercial Jesuman and the promoters of La Gran Manzana, who formally welcomed the first visitors to the centre.

A commitment to sustainability

Conceived from the outset as an innovative project, La Gran Manzana has a strong focus on sustainability and energy efficiency. The complex features an advanced energy generation and storage system that allows it to operate with a high degree of self-sufficiency, making it a national and European benchmark for the integration of technological solutions in the retail sector and a model of development aligned with future environmental challenges. Among its key innovations is a state-of-the-art energy infrastructure comprising a 1,100 kW solar photovoltaic plant, a 3 MW / 5.4 MWh storage system, and an innovative energy vectorisation system that can convert ambient humidity into drinking water. These technologies place La Gran Manzana among the most advanced shopping centres in Europe when it comes to sustainability.

Retail, leisure, and connectivity

In addition to its innovative infrastructure, the centre brings together a wide range of fashion, dining, sport, health, wellness, and service outlets, with both national and international operators. It offers over 1,000 parking spaces, 50 electric vehicle charging points, and a strategic location just minutes from Tenerife South Airport, reinforcing San Miguel de Abona’s role as one of the key economic hubs in the south of the island. La Gran Manzana opens today with a substantial retail offering already in place, but the project will continue to grow over the coming months with the addition of new leisure spaces that will strengthen its position as a meeting point for the whole island. Planned future openings include a modern cinema complex and a bowling alley, completing an offer designed to let residents and visitors enjoy shopping, dining, leisure, and entertainment all in one place.

A milestone for the region

The opening of La Gran Manzana marks a milestone for San Miguel de Abona and for Tenerife as a whole, consolidating a development model built on technological innovation, environmental commitment, and the creation of new economic and social opportunities for the area.
