LPGC 31 seeks to connect with the Canary Islands’ cultural fabric
The bid for Las Palmas de Gran Canaria to become European Capital of Culture in 2031 has kicked off its series of face-to-face meetings in Lanzarote. Over the coming weeks, the LPGC 31 team will travel to different islands across the archipelago to present the second Open Call for ‘Rebellion of Geography’ and invite representatives and members of the Canary Islands’ cultural sector to be part of this exciting collective challenge.
Mayor Darias: ‘This is a decisive moment’
Mayor Carolina Darias was very clear in describing the decisive moment facing the LPGC 31 bid. “The final phase demands more. It demands greater precision, participation, ambition, and the ability to demonstrate that this bid has deep roots and a European horizon,” she said. She reminded attendees that this call must be read in continuity with the strategic framework: “The Cultural Rights Plan reminds us that culture also belongs to those who live it, inherit it, practise it and reinvent it.”
Open Call shifts focus to people and organisations
As José Luis Pérez Pont, artistic director of the LPGC 31 bid, explained: “This second call represents an evolution: the focus now shifts towards the people, organisations and agents who make creation, mediation and cultural management possible. That change is important. It is not just about collecting projects. It is about recognising those who make them possible.”
Councillor for Culture Josué Íñiguez noted that so far 65 proposals have been received for this new strategic Open Call, which aims to strengthen the connection with citizens.
First stop: Lanzarote session builds momentum
The first stop of the LPGC 31 inter-island tour took place on 19 June at the Arrecife Civic Centre. Representatives from various artistic and cultural sectors across Lanzarote attended an information session organised by the bid’s technical office. According to a statement from the bid promoters, attendees had the opportunity to learn in depth about the objectives and European dimension of a project that aims to make culture a tool for social and territorial transformation, while placing the Canary Islands at the centre of European cultural conversation “from a perspective built on the unique characteristics of island territories.”
The session presented the main conceptual pillars of ‘Rebellion of Geography’ as well as the details of the Open Call currently underway. This call remains open until 15 July and seeks to incorporate new profiles, cultural agents, organisations and proposals to continue building the final Bid Book that Las Palmas de Gran Canaria will present to the European jury. Attendees were able to exchange views with the bid’s technical team, ask questions about the participation process, and learn about the opportunities offered by an initiative conceived through listening, collaboration and diversity of perspectives.
Next stop: La Palma on 3 July
The next destination will take the LPGC 31 team to La Palma, specifically to the Real Sociedad Aridane in the municipality of Los Llanos de Aridane (Plaza de España, 1) on Friday 3 July at 7pm. Entry is free until capacity is reached.
Building a shared opportunity for all the Canary Islands
With this territorial tour, LPGC 31 reinforces its commitment to building a bid that transcends municipal boundaries and becomes a shared opportunity for the whole of the Canary Islands. The technical office will visit different islands in the coming weeks with the aim of bringing the project closer to professionals, groups, associations, cultural businesses and institutions interested in contributing to the creation of a cultural programme with international ambition.
The bid understands that the cultural richness of the archipelago lies in the plurality of its territories, the diversity of its agents, and the ability to generate collaboration networks that connect the Canary Islands with Europe and with other territories around the world.
Who can take part and how to submit
The second Open Call of ‘Rebellion of Geography’ is aimed at artists, cultural managers, mediators, curators, cultural businesses, associations, foundations, public institutions, collectives, and initiatives working at the intersection of culture, education, innovation, science, sustainability, wellbeing or social cohesion. The contributions gathered will feed into both the cultural programme planned between 2026 and 2031 and the legacy of a project that aims to strengthen cultural rights, citizen participation and international cooperation from an island perspective.
Proposals and profiles can be submitted until 15 July via the bid’s website, accessible at www.rebeliondelageografia.com and www.lpgc2031.com.
With this first meeting in Lanzarote, the LPGC 31 bid begins a journey that seeks to bring together talent, experience and fresh perspectives to build a shared cultural proposal capable of projecting the Canary Islands as a European benchmark for cultural innovation, citizen participation and cooperation between territories.
