£3.5m transformation for Tenerife’s Malpaso waste plant

£3.5 million investment for Malpaso

The Cabildo de Tenerife is investing £3.5 million to turn the Malpaso transfer plant in Arona into a fully-fledged logistics hub. One of the most significant upgrades to the waste management complex involves the installation of treatment and shredding facilities for bulky waste, the launch of a clean point, and the creation of a service area for caravans.

A first for the island: caravan service area

This last feature is one of the biggest innovations and an initiative that will be rolled out across all clean points on the island, according to the Cabildo. A dedicated area has been created where caravans can empty their grey and black water tanks, as well as top up with fresh drinking water.

What the works include

The works involved the construction of a covered structure for the storage and treatment of bulky waste; a building for general services; and a cabin for the separate collection of waste at the clean point. Improvements have also been made to the pre-treatment system for leachate, and the Tenerife+Sostenible corporate image has been implemented across all buildings within the complex.

Improving efficiency for the south-west

The aim is to improve the efficiency of waste treatment from the municipalities of Arona, Adeje, Santiago del Teide, Guía de Isora, Granadilla de Abona, Vilaflor, and San Miguel de Abona, while also broadening the range of services available at the Malpaso facilities.

Future plans across the island

The President of the Cabildo de Tenerife, Rosa Dávila, highlighted the new service area for caravans and announced that similar facilities would soon be installed at the clean point in Las Chafiras in San Miguel, as well as at the clean point in the Complejo Ambiental. The Minister for Natural Environment, Blanca Pérez, explained that the Malpaso logistics centre “is an important facility serving the entire south-west of the island” and an example of the kind of works that will be carried out elsewhere.
