Cabildo greenlights £2.8m sewerage projects and youth jobs scheme

Cabildo approves major sewerage upgrades in Santa Úrsula and Tacoronte

The Cabildo of Tenerife gave the green light on Wednesday (17 June) to tender two sewerage projects in Santa Úrsula and Tacoronte worth a combined €3.36 million. The investment forms part of a wider package of new measures agreed at Wednesday’s meeting of the island’s Governing Council, which also included funding for youth employment and heritage restoration.

Vice-president Lope Afonso explained that the works will modernise and expand the sewer networks in La Bastona, Santa Úrsula, and Mesa del Mar, Tacoronte. The aim is to move towards separate drainage systems and optimise the island’s entire water cycle. Speaking at the post-meeting press conference, Afonso emphasised the “strategic” nature of the infrastructure, underlining its importance for water sustainability, public health, and the conservation of the coastline.

€1.79 million Santa Úrsula project leads the way

In Santa Úrsula, the project has a budget of €1.79 million, 90 per cent of which will be funded by the Cabildo. Plans include installing a separate sewerage network, building a rainwater drainage system, and partially renewing the water supply network. The Mesa del Mar project in Tacoronte, meanwhile, involves an investment of €1.57 million, with the Cabildo covering 80 per cent of the cost. According to the vice-president, the work will resolve “historical deficiencies” in wastewater collection by installing new connections and rolling out the main collector on Calle Mesa del Mar.

€1.76 million boost for youth employment

The Governing Council also reported on the outcome of a grants programme aimed at promoting skilled youth employment, with a total allocation of €1.76 million. The initiative, managed through Fifede (the Canary Islands Foundation for Training, Employment and Business Development), will fund one-year contracts for 54 unemployed young graduates. The professional training contracts will provide practical work experience across 18 public bodies on the island.

Cabildo President Rosa Dávila stressed that facilitating access to employment for young people is a priority for the island government.

Heritage restoration in Vilaflor de Chasna

In a further move, the Cabildo announced it will allocate more than €811,000 to restoring the area around Los Lavaderos (the washhouses) and the Fuente del Chorrillo spring in Vilaflor de Chasna. The funding comes under the 2023-2027 Island Heritage Programme. The total investment amounts to €901,887, with the Cabildo contributing 90 per cent and Vilaflor Town Hall the remaining 10 per cent.

The restoration work, scheduled to take place between 2026 and 2028, aims to conserve and enhance this ethnographic site, which has historically been linked to water supply and management in the municipality. The Cabildo said the intervention will help preserve a space of significant heritage and social value for the island.
