trade winds return canary islands thursday

Thursday: Trade winds return, temperatures drop

A breath of fresh Atlantic air

The recent spell of heat is finally easing. From Thursday, the familiar trade winds return, bringing temperatures back down to more typical seasonal levels. The last traces of Saharan dust will linger through the day but are expected to clear completely by Friday.

Expect low clouds across northern slopes of the more mountainous islands, especially during the early morning and late evening, before dissipating around midday. Southern coasts and high summits will enjoy mostly clear skies. In the eastern islands, the sun will break through by noon.

The wind will blow moderately from the east-northeast, picking up noticeably around the northwest and southeast tips of the islands. On higher ground, the breeze will shift to a westerly component. By Friday, the trade wind influence will be felt at all altitudes.

Temperatures will drop, particularly in the midlands (medianías), while coastal areas will see little change. The ocean will be rough off northern coasts, with waves below 1.5 metres, and slightly choppy in the south.

Island-by-island outlook

Tenerife

Clouds will lose ground, appearing mainly at dawn and dusk over northern slopes and the Anaga massif. Elsewhere, skies will be mostly clear. Expect fresh winds and cooler conditions in the midlands.

Gran Canaria

Strong gusts are forecast for the west and southeast coastlines. Cloud cover will be limited to the north, with sunshine dominating the rest of the island. Temperatures will range between 19°C and 23°C.

Lanzarote

In Arrecife, expect temperatures between 18°C and 24°C. Morning cloud cover in the north and west will gradually thin out, giving way to brighter spells.

Fuerteventura

Little cloud cover expected, with only a brief buildup over the centre of the island during the morning. Moderate trade winds and fresher temperatures throughout the day.

La Palma

Low clouds will gather over the north-northeast, rising slightly higher than in recent days. The rest of the island stays clear, with winds strengthening as the day progresses. Temperatures will continue to fall.

La Gomera

The trade wind will pick up speed in the usual exposed areas. Clouds will settle over the north, with clear skies elsewhere. In San Sebastián, temperatures will range between 19°C and 24°C.

El Hierro

Clouds will appear mainly at dawn and dusk over the northeast. Winds will become more noticeable around the island’s extremes. In Valverde, temperatures will hover between 14°C and 20°C.

La Graciosa

Low clouds early in the morning will quickly give way to blue skies. Less Saharan dust in the air, and a slightly stronger breeze than recent days. Temperatures will hold steady.
