Brief respite from summer heat
After the intense heatwaves of this summer, the Canary Islands are set for a few days’ respite. From Thursday, the archipelago will face a change in weather conditions, with cloudy skies and rain in various parts of the islands. The episode will also bring a drop in temperatures, particularly on Friday, before conditions stabilise again and thermometers recover higher values over the weekend, according to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet).
Cloudy skies and rain on Thursday
On Thursday, skies will be cloudy across much of the Canary Islands, with precipitation more frequent in certain areas. In Mogán, cloudy skies with light rain are expected, while Las Palmas de Gran Canaria will see overcast skies with rain. In the south of Tenerife, Arona will also experience cloudy intervals with light showers, as will La Orotava, while Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Valverde will see predominantly cloudy skies but no rain. Santa Cruz de La Palma, meanwhile, will have a wetter Thursday, unlike Fuerteventura and Lanzarote, where rain is not expected to dominate.
Temperatures will remain relatively high during Thursday. Maximums will reach 30°C in Gran Canaria and 31°C in Tenerife, particularly in the warmest areas.
Friday brings the most significant change
Friday will bring the most notable shift. Rainfall will ease compared with Thursday, but temperatures will also drop across the archipelago. Maximums will hover around 28°C, while minimums will range between 21°C and 23°C. As a result, Friday will be a cooler day in the Canary Islands, following the highs of up to 30°C and 31°C forecast for Thursday.
Sun and heat return by Sunday
The dip in temperatures will be short-lived. By Sunday, the sun will regain prominence and thermometers will start climbing once more. In Gran Canaria, maximum temperatures could reach 33°C, while in Tenerife they will rise to 31°C. Minimums will sit around 21°C in Gran Canaria and 19°C in Tenerife.
In just a few days, the Canary Islands will therefore move from cloudy skies and rain back to stable weather and high temperatures, with values once again on the rise by Sunday.
