Tourist caught riding in car boot on Tenerife road

Shocking footage from Güímar

A video recorded this Saturday in Güímar, Tenerife, has sparked a strong reaction on social media due to the dangerous scene it shows: a car driving along the main road with the boot open and a man travelling inside it. The footage was captured by other road users and broadcast by Televisión Canaria, before spreading rapidly across various platforms.

Guardia Civil intervention

According to information from Radio Televisión Canaria (RTVC), the Civil Guard was carrying out a checkpoint in the area and managed to intercept the vehicle just minutes later. Both the driver and the man in the boot were identified by officers and could face penalties for conduct contrary to road safety.

Why this is so dangerous

The image has attracted attention not only for the unusual nature of the scene, but for the obvious risk it posed to the occupant, the driver and other road users. Travelling in the boot of a car makes it impossible to wear a seatbelt, leaves the occupant with no real protection in the event of braking or a collision, and can affect the stability and safety of the vehicle.

What the law says

The General Traffic Regulations state that the number of people transported in a vehicle must not exceed the number of authorised seats. Furthermore, regulations require occupants to use the corresponding safety systems, such as seatbelts, in the prescribed conditions.
