Fatal Blaze in Los Realejos
A woman has died and around 30 people from thirteen families have been rehoused following a fire that broke out in Tenerife in the early hours of this Saturday. The blaze began inside one of sixteen flats in a building at 3:00 am in the municipality of Los Realejos, in the north of the island.
Emergency Response and Investigation
The alert was raised with the Canary Islands Emergency and Security Coordination Centre (Cecoes) after flames were seen coming from the three-storey building, located on Los Bancales street in the Toscal-Longuera area. The incident is currently being investigated by officers from the National Police’s Judicial Police Brigade and Forensic Science Unit to determine how and where the fire started.
At the time of the fire, thirteen flats in the building were occupied, while the other three were empty. Six people required medical assistance and were transferred to medical centres by personnel from the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC) after being affected by smoke inhalation. These individuals were in the stairwell and courtyard when they were evacuated.
Fire Safety Advice and Damage
Tenerife Fire Brigade reminds the public that if there is smoke in a building, residents should shelter inside their homes, closing doors, windows, and any gaps to prevent intoxication. Firefighters from Tenerife Fire Consortium stations in La Orotava, Icod de los Vinos, La Laguna, and Santa Cruz de Tenerife attended the scene, along with volunteer firefighters from Ycoden-Daute, ambulances, officers from the Los Realejos Local Police, and members of the National Police.
The fire originated in a first-floor flat and the flames spread across the building’s facade, also affecting adjacent flats and those on the upper floors. The vast majority of those displaced were able to stay with family, with only two families needing to spend the night in a local hotel.
Local Authority Support
The Mayor of Los Realejos, Adolfo González, was present at the scene from the early hours to monitor the fire’s progression and ensure affected residents received appropriate care. Also attending the Toscal-Longuera area were the Deputy Chief Inspector of the Local Police, Isaías Orihuela, and a social worker from Los Realejos Town Hall, who managed support for a resident in the building with special needs.
