Senior Hutch Gang Figure Arrested in Lanzarote
Just one week after the National Police detained one of the leaders of the Neapolitan Camorra, specifically the Zagaria Clan, in the Canary Islands, another significant arrest has taken place in the archipelago. This time, officers have detained a leader of the Hutch criminal organisation in a joint operation with Irish police. The Hutch gang is considered by Dublin authorities to be one of the most dangerous organised crime structures in Ireland. The arrest was made in the town of Tías, in Lanzarote.
Link to Previous Arrest of Gang Boss
Notably, in October 2024, the boss of this mafia, Gerard Hutch, known as ‘The Monk’, was also arrested in Lanzarote alongside eight other people accused of drug trafficking, human trafficking, and money laundering. The Spanish General Directorate of Police states that the man detained on Wednesday is at the top of the Hutch hierarchy, serving as one of the leaders of the criminal organisation’s intelligence cell, as well as directing money movements alongside his father.
Swift Action Following European Warrant
His arrest was carried out just 24 hours after a European arrest warrant was issued by Ireland and after officers from the Irish police force, the Garda Síochána, travelled to Spain to collaborate on the operation. The Irish Hutch criminal organisation is built around strong intergenerational family ties and close relationships in the city of Dublin. It is involved in various criminal activities and since 2016 has maintained a rivalry with another clan, the Kinahans, a feud that has to date claimed 18 lives, mostly on the Hutch side.
Deadly Feud Origins
The conflict intensified following several murders, including that of Gary Patrick Hutch in Mijas (Málaga) in 2015, who was the nephew of ‘The Monk’. This crime triggered reprisals with new homicides between February and August 2016, including that of the Dublin gangster’s own brother, who was released on bail of €100,000 by a court in Arrecife months after his detention.
