Council Calls for Urgent Coastal Repairs After Storm
The Antigua Council on Fuerteventura has formally requested that the Coastal Authority intervene urgently to repair the destruction caused by Storm Therese in Pozo Negro. The council highlights the clear danger posed by deep cavities and undermining to families, children, and residents of the village using the pathway.
Awaiting Permission to Act on Dangerous Conditions
In a statement, the council noted that the Coastal Authority had previously reported the council for carrying out repairs—which it could not complete—for damage caused a year ago. Mayor Matías Peña explained that the council is now reiterating its request for the authority to intervene and repair the pathway due to the ongoing hazard. The council is awaiting permission to be able to act itself. “We consider this an urgent intervention and hope to receive a response and permission from the Coastal Authority as soon as possible,” the statement reads.
Appeal Made to Island Government
This request has also been forwarded to the Fuerteventura Island Council (Cabildo), emphasising the need for action in Pozo Negro and other affected coastal towns. The Antigua Council stresses the importance of acting within the legal framework and points out that, upon receiving authorisation from the Coastal Authority, it will act urgently using all its municipal means and funding to carry out the necessary repairs.
