Easter Hotel Bookings Hold Firm in Tenerife Province
Hotel reservations for the Easter holiday period are showing no signs of weakening in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. With just ten days to go until the start of the festive break (from 29th March to 5th April), the hotel association Ashotel forecasts occupancy rates nearly identical to last year.
Occupancy Rates Across the Islands
According to a survey conducted by Ashotel’s Tourism Competitiveness Observatory between 16th and 20th March, the average occupancy currently stands at 78.17%, barely a percentage point below the figures recorded last year, even though that holiday period fell later in April. The associated hotel and non-hotel establishments report a booking percentage of 79.07% for Tenerife (-0.7% compared to last Easter). La Palma has bookings at 65.4% (-12.68%), while La Gomera is experiencing a slight recovery, with an average booking rate of 63.4% (+4.2%). Finally, El Hierro has its bookings for this period at an average of 88.5%, though due to the low number of survey responses, it cannot be directly compared to last year.
Tenerife’s Regional Breakdown
Looking at the different zones within Tenerife, the south records the highest percentage, with an average of 83.3%—exactly the same as last year. The north currently has a booking volume of 68.9% (-0.2%), and the metropolitan area, as is typical in this less-demanded period for the zone, averages 50.5% (-10.3%).
Mixed Expectations for the Final Figures
Regarding expectations for how this holiday period will conclude, the survey results are very mixed. Some 37.5% of respondents believe they will have occupancy equal to last Easter, while 36.8% think it will be worse, and the remaining 25.7% believe it will be better. The trend for last-minute bookings continues to prevail, leading several respondents to consider that this year’s Easter period may close slightly above last year’s, which reached an average of 83% among Ashotel associates in the province.
Other respondents pointed out that Storm Therese, which has affected the Canaries in recent days, has also influenced some clients’ decisions to cancel.
