Major works begin on port’s new public park
The Port Authority of Las Palmas (APLP) has commenced construction work on the future urban park for the Port of Las Palmas. In line with the project plans, the initial phase involves demolition work, including the removal of existing buildings, their foundations, the perimeter wall, and the current asphalt surfaces and kerbs of the flower beds. This first phase has a budget of €956,693.
Strategic opening of the port to the city
In a statement, the authority detailed that the works, awarded to the company Asfaltos Jaén SLU, correspond to the first phase of execution and are progressing according to the planned schedule since the signing of the setting-out report on 8 January. It further stated that this is a strategic action aimed at “generating a new open space for citizens within the port environment.”
Parallel to this, earthworks have also begun with the excavation of land in areas designated for future flower beds and garden spaces, thereby advancing the physical layout of the new area.
A new accessible meeting point for locals
The President of the Port Authority of Las Palmas, Beatriz Calzada, emphasised that “this action represents a very important step in our strategy of opening the port to the city. We want this new urban park to become an accessible, inclusive, and useful space for citizens, strengthening the port-city relationship in an environment especially significant for Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.”
Work is currently continuing on the demolition of remaining elements and removal of surfaces, along with the necessary excavations for trenches to install public lighting and irrigation network pipelines—essential infrastructure for the park’s subsequent development.
Urban furniture and future vision
In parallel, orders have already been placed for the urban furniture planned for this phase, which will include outdoor gym equipment, children’s play systems, and various other urban amenities contemplated in the project.
Calzada added that “this park is born with the vocation of becoming a new meeting point for citizens, combining green areas, leisure spaces, and facilities that will allow people to enjoy a new urban area in the port environment.”
The Port Authority of Las Palmas notes that the future urban park is part of the strategy to transform port spaces, driven by the entity to make the port’s economic activity compatible with new urban, social, and environmental uses. This park will become an open space with garden areas, pedestrian walkways, and amenities intended for public use in one of the areas with the greatest urban potential within the port surroundings.
