Major Coastal Regeneration for Puerto de Santiago
A comprehensive project to refurbish and enhance the beach at Puerto de Santiago, the Los Chochos tidal pool, the Isla Cangrejo natural pool, and the Las Bajas area has been allocated a budget of seven million euros. The General Directorate for Coasts and Canary Islands Maritime Space Management and Santiago del Teide Council are driving forward and expediting the necessary permits to develop the already-awarded basic and execution plans.
Creating a New Green Lung
The scope of this intervention covers an area of more than 7,000 square metres. It includes environmental and landscape rehabilitation, as well as improved accessibility along this stretch of the Santiago coast. The overarching aim is to turn this space into the “green lung of the area”. The council, led by Emilio Navarro, plans to carry out the work in four distinct phases.
Phase One: Pedestrian Connections and Landscaping
The first intended phase involves connecting the Paseo de La Hondura with the pedestrian section of Puerto de Santiago beach. This will involve landscape treatment in the form of a terrace on the existing natural slope on the beach of Santiago del Teide’s most populous town. Furthermore, plans include pedestrianising the final section of Agustín León road up to La Sirena street and connecting Agustín León square with the beach car park via a new footpath to be developed on the natural slope itself.
Subsequent Phases: Walkways and Facilities
The second phase will involve refurbishing or replacing the suspended sanitation network on the slope to better integrate it into the natural environment. A footbridge will be installed to run above the sanitation network, and the beach will be connected to the Los Chochos tidal pool and its surroundings. The third phase includes upgrading the access road to the entrance of the natural pool. This area will also be furnished with terrace spaces for sunbathing using removable materials and elements.
The final stage of the project will consist of improving the access path to the various bathing spots and installing platforms to facilitate entry into the water from the path and the different bathing areas. This will be complemented with additional sunbathing terraces.
A Long-Awaited Boost for the Local Area
The Mayor of Santiago del Teide, Emilio Navarro, asserts that this project will contribute to the development of the municipality’s coastline and promote economic growth in the area. It also responds to a demand and objective put forward years ago by residents, businesses, and authorities. The mayor recently met with the General Director for Coasts and Canary Islands Maritime Space Management, Antonio Manuel Acosta, to progress the authorisations needed to bring this project to fruition.
