Tenerife heat and calima forecast for Saturday

Heat and calima return to Tenerife

Tenerife is braced for another day of calima in the midlands and high peaks this Saturday, 1 August, with mostly clear skies and high temperatures expected across the island, according to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet). The day will be dominated by stable conditions, with some cloud intervals on the coasts during the early hours and first part of the morning, before clear spells take hold across most of the island.

Temperatures climbing towards 37 degrees

The heat will remain one of the main talking points. Aemet forecasts temperatures exceeding 34 degrees in south-facing midlands, as well as in the peaks and midlands of the southern dorsal ridge. In these areas, localised readings of up to 37 degrees cannot be ruled out. In Santa Cruz de Tenerife, thermometers are expected to range between a minimum of 24 degrees and a maximum of 31 degrees.

The forecast for Tenerife includes calima in the midlands and peaks, as part of an episode that will also affect the other mountainous islands. The suspended dust will be most noticeable at higher altitudes, although it could add to the feeling of a dry and heavy atmosphere. Minimum temperatures will also remain elevated in the areas most affected by the heat. In the southern midlands and summit areas, overnight values will hover around 22 to 24 degrees, which could make rest difficult in some spots.

In the higher areas of northern Tenerife, Aemet predicts maximums of between 32 and 34 degrees, meaning the heat will not be confined to the south of the island alone.

Wind and sea conditions

Winds in Tenerife will be light to moderate from a northerly direction. During the second half of the day, they may pick up occasionally at the northeastern and western extremes of the island. The forecast does not rule out strong intervals in these areas, particularly in the afternoon. Elsewhere, winds will generally be more moderate.

At sea, Aemet forecasts northerly or northwesterly winds of force 3 to 5, with a moderate to rough swell, easing to slight to moderate. A northerly or north-easterly swell of 1 to 2 metres is also expected, along with the presence of calima.

Gran Canaria set to be hottest island

Although Tenerife will see high temperatures, Gran Canaria is once again expected to record the most notable values across the archipelago. In the peaks and midlands of the south and west, 37 degrees are expected, with localised readings of 39 degrees not ruled out. In the northern midlands of Gran Canaria, particularly in the Agaete valley, temperatures are also forecast to exceed 34 degrees, reaching 37 degrees locally. In the worst-affected areas, minimums may not drop below 26 to 28 degrees. In Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the forecast ranges between 23 and 28 degrees, with milder values than in the island’s midlands and peaks.

Forecast for the other islands

In Lanzarote, mostly clear skies will prevail, with some intervals in the north during the early hours and first part of the morning. There will be calima at altitude, and temperatures could reach 34 degrees in low-lying areas of the southeastern slopes. In Arrecife, the forecast is 22 to 34 degrees.

For Fuerteventura, Aemet predicts temperatures of 34 degrees in inland areas of the east and southeast, with localised readings of 37 degrees possible. In Puerto del Rosario, thermometers will range between 23 and 32 degrees.

In La Gomera, 34 degrees are expected in the peaks and south-facing midlands, with the possibility of reaching 37 degrees locally. In the northern midlands, temperatures will range between 30 and 32 degrees, reaching 34 degrees in isolated spots.

In La Palma, the midlands could see temperatures of 30 to 32 degrees, with the possibility of localised values of 34 degrees. In the peaks and the El Paso area, 34 degrees are also forecast.

In El Hierro, the midlands will generally register temperatures of 30 to 32 degrees, while in the peaks and slopes facing south and southeast, 34 degrees are likely.
