In Tenerife, more specifically in the heart of San Cristóbal de La Laguna, there is a café with several decades of history that continues to win over those seeking homemade food on the island. The establishment first opened its doors in 1955, founded by an Italian, and has maintained its original name ever since.

The content creators behind @guachinchesmodernos recently visited the venue and did not hesitate to share the experience with their followers. “Today we’re going to show you an absolutely brilliant spot for home cooking in the centre of La Laguna,” they state. To begin, the restaurant served them some bread to whet their appetite. “Being in La Laguna and being brought warm bread is a real plus, especially aniseed bread,” they comment.

A Feast of Traditional Flavours

For a starter, they were clear they would opt for the stuffed eggs (‘huevos rellenos’), and the establishment itself recommended they try the Russian salad (‘ensaladilla’). Next, the homemade meatballs were another chosen dish. “I saw the older gentleman back there making them and I just had to order them,” affirms Joana. One dish that particularly caught the TikTokers’ attention was the “cocido Venezia”, a house special that doesn’t really have a formal name. It’s a recipe made with cabbage, chorizo, black pudding, bacon, potatoes, chickpeas and “Javi’s special touch”.

“Even if we describe it, you won’t understand how this smells unless you come and try it,” they confirm in the video. “I don’t recall trying anything quite like this in Tenerife before,” they comment while enjoying it, highlighting the flavour of the dish. They also praised the wide variety of hearty stews and traditional recipes on offer, such as pota (flying squid), tuna in sauce, or peas.

Sweet Finale and Lasting Legacy

To finish, they chose a ‘torrija’ (Spanish French toast) with ice cream because Jonay claims to be a lover of this dessert. Although they previously only served breakfasts, over time the establishment has expanded its culinary offering. For the past 15 years, Jose has been at the helm of the café and “makes all the customers feel at home,” comment the content creators in the video.

It is open from Tuesday to Thursday from 7:00 to 23:00, with non-stop service, while on Fridays and Saturdays it extends its hours until 1:00. The establishment is closed on Mondays for staff rest.
