Pope Leo XIV to visit Tenerife with alternative airport plan

Pope’s Tenerife visit has a plan B for foggy conditions

Beyond “the Lord putting his hand on it,” as the Bishop of Tenerife, Eloy Santiago, put it, the organisation of Pope Leo XIV’s visit to Tenerife on Friday, 12 June has a backup plan in case the mist — a hallmark of the season — prevents the American pontiff from landing at Tenerife North–Los Rodeos Airport. The alternative is Tenerife South Airport (Reina Sofía), which has not only been discussed but is also being actively incorporated into advanced preparations with Aena, the Spanish airport authority. This contingency would require a change to the itinerary that the bishop detailed this Thursday, the day after the Spanish Episcopal Conference published the official schedule approved by the Vatican.

Six intense hours in Tenerife

Bishop Eloy Santiago was generous with detail, describing the six intense hours that Pope Leo will spend on the island, under the best-case scenario of landing at Los Rodeos at 9.00 am. There, Leo XIV will be greeted by the host bishop and local authorities before heading to the migrant reception centre in La Raíces. From there, the Pope will proceed to Plaza del Cristo, where migration will again be the central theme of testimonies presented to him by four ecclesial groups: the Good Samaritan Foundation, Caritas, the La Restinga welcome team, and Don Bosco.

On a stage designed by architect Alejandro Beautell, the young people from the Good Samaritan Foundation will perform a piece related to their experience. As a surprise, the choir that recorded the hymn of the Pope’s visit to Spain — produced by local artist Pablo Cebrián — will perform. The hymn was recorded at La Laguna Cathedral.

Street procession and migrant focus

From Plaza del Cristo, the Pope will travel along Calle Viana in a small car, where he will greet the sick, the elderly, and vulnerable people, before arriving at Calle San Agustín and the Bishop’s Palace for a short rest, a greeting to authorities, and then onwards to Santa Cruz. Until this point, the entourage will travel in a security vehicle.

Upon arrival at the La Salle-San Ildefonso school in the capital, Leo XIV will board the popemobile. Accompanied by Bishop Eloy Santiago, he will travel through Plaza Militar, Plaza de Weyler, Méndez Núñez, El Pilar, and Villalba Hervás, continuing along the coastal avenue to the celebration site at the port of Santa Cruz.

Mass at the port for over 50,000 pilgrims

The celebration site at the Los Llanos dock will open its gates six hours before midday on Friday, 12 June, when the thanksgiving mass presided over by Leo XIV will begin — the crowning event of his visit to Spain. The Bishop of Tenerife confirmed that, with just over four weeks to go, the organisation already has 1,500 volunteers, plus another 400 extraordinary ministers for the mass. He also stated that 22,000 registrations have been received to attend the mass at the Port of Santa Cruz, though organisers expect more than 50,000 people to gather.

Security and practical advice for attendees

Organisers reminded attendees of security measures, explaining that although gates open at 6.30 am, pilgrims will not need to get up early to secure a spot, as all seats will be numbered or at least distributed by sector. The entry pass received by registered attendees will specify where they will sit. Regarding seating, the organisation already has 20,000 chairs from Tenerife and plans to bring another 20,000 from mainland Spain.

Important points to note: due to strict security controls at the access points, only bottled water in plastic containers will be permitted — no aluminium cans. Chairs and any other “blunt” objects that security deems to breach the rules are also prohibited. Visitors may bring food into the site. A cap, water, and even sun protection are recommended, as the mass begins at midday and lasts two hours. To facilitate entry, four walkways will be installed from the coastal avenue to the celebration site at Santa Cruz port, along with a fifth reserved for authorities.

A once-in-a-century event

The bishop offered a reflection for those still hesitating about attending: “We are facing a unique event in history, happening for the first time, and I do not know if the Pope will return in the coming years or if it will be more than a century before he does.” He urged everyone to join the occasion and enjoy the visit of Pope Leo XIV to La Laguna and Santa Cruz on 12 June.
