Japanese fine dining meets Atlantic views: OKA opens Saturday lunches

A new chapter for OKA at Gran Hotel Taoro

There are places where a meal becomes more than just a culinary experience — where the landscape, the produce and the history of the surroundings end up on the plate. Northern Tenerife is home to one such spot, and from this summer, it will be possible to discover it at lunchtime too.

The OKA restaurant, located in the iconic Gran Hotel Taoro in Puerto de la Cruz, will reopen its doors on 18 June with one of the season’s biggest news: the introduction of weekend lunch service. It is an opportunity to enjoy a culinary concept that connects Japan, the Mediterranean and the Canary Islands from one of the island’s most spectacular terraces.

Japanese technique, Canarian soul

From its privileged vantage point overlooking Puerto de la Cruz, OKA has built a distinct identity based on combining Japanese technique with local ingredients. The gastronomic offering stems from a simple yet ambitious idea: to use seasonal produce, daily catches and local ingredients to reinterpret Japanese cuisine with Mediterranean influences and nods to Canarian flavours. The result is a constantly evolving menu where nigiris, usuzukuris, tartares, grilled dishes and creations that change according to market availability all sit side by side — all set against a backdrop where the Atlantic Ocean, the Orotava Valley and Mount Teide become part of the scenery.

A Michelin-winning pedigree

Behind OKA is Ricardo Sanz, widely regarded as one of the leading figures of Japanese cuisine in Spain. His career is closely linked to the development of this style of cooking in the country, and he was one of the pioneers to earn a Michelin star with an international proposal based on Japanese culinary traditions. Working alongside him is Emiliano Liska, who brings a contemporary vision defined by balance, precision and respect for each preparation. Together, they have created a concept that avoids clichés and seeks to offer a dining experience where technique serves the produce.

Weekend lunches: a new perspective

The main news this season is precisely the chance to enjoy OKA during daylight hours. The addition of Saturday and Sunday lunch service opens up an entirely different perspective of the restaurant. By day, the panoramic terrace takes centre stage, offering one of the most breathtaking views in northern Tenerife. The experience invites diners to take their time over their meal while the Atlantic Ocean and Mount Teide accompany each dish from the horizon.

After lunch, the evening continues

The experience does not end when dessert arrives. Those visiting OKA can extend their afternoon at Tagoror Lobby Bar & Lounge, one of the most distinctive spaces at Gran Hotel Taoro. There, guests can continue their after-meal relaxation with signature cocktails, coffees or a selection of drinks in a relaxed atmosphere that retains the elegant essence of this historic establishment.

A historic hotel’s culinary renaissance

The reopening also coincides with a new chapter for the Gran Hotel Taoro, considered Spain’s first grand luxury hotel. First opened in 1890 and now fully restored, the hotel has become one of the leading tourist and gastronomic landmarks in northern Tenerife. Alongside venues such as LAVA and Amalur, led by chef Erlantz Gorostiza, OKA forms part of a culinary push that aims to place the hotel among the archipelago’s top food destinations. Now, with the arrival of weekend lunches, Ricardo Sanz’s signature Japanese cuisine adds another attraction: the chance to enjoy Japan without leaving Tenerife, with the Atlantic at your feet and Mount Teide watching from afar.
