Monday: strong winds and rough seas on the Islands

Monday starts the week with brisk winds and a turbulent Atlantic. Strong northeasterly gusts are expected, particularly on exposed slopes and summits, while high waves will batter northern and western coastlines.

General Outlook

The dominant feature today is a moderate to strong northeasterly wind. Gusts could exceed 70 km/h in exposed areas, on mountain peaks, and on the southeast and northwest slopes of the larger islands. The ocean is rough, with a combined northerly swell. Waves may reach and surpass 4 metres on coasts open to the north and on the western shores of El Hierro, La Palma, La Gomera, Fuerteventura, and Lanzarote. Other coasts will see areas of strong swell.

Cloudy conditions in the north of the mountainous islands this morning will tend to scattered clouds or clear skies by the afternoon. Daytime temperatures will be pleasant, with a slight rise expected in inland and summit areas.
