Las Palmas awards €1.68m contract for Guiniguada arts promenade project
Las Palmas de Gran Canaria City Council has awarded Batlle i Roig Arquitectura SLP a €1.68 million contract to develop the AWA project, the winning entry in the 2025 competition to create the Paseo Guiniguada de la Cultura y las Artes Canarias. The award, announced by the council in a statement on Monday, covers the drafting of the detailed design, construction supervision and health and safety coordination, with a completion period of 48 months.
A step forward for the Guiniguada ravine
Mauricio Roque, councillor for Planning, Urban Development and Housing, said the award allows the project to move into its next phase, part of an initiative aimed at driving the transformation of the area around the Guiniguada ravine. The AWA proposal secured 46.7% of the votes in the public consultation organised by the council and was also the highest-rated entry by the competition jury, scoring 83 points out of 90.
Green spaces and sustainable mobility
The project envisages the revitalisation of some 40,000 square metres of the ravine through landscaped, tree-lined pedestrian spaces, with the aim of fostering the urban and social integration of the historic quarter and promoting sustainable mobility. The initiative also incorporates an ecological connectivity strategy between the coast and the inland neighbourhoods, based on increasing biodiversity and plant cover.
A new cultural square and open-air exhibition space
Among the planned measures is the transformation of the space between the Vegueta Market and the Pérez Galdós Theatre into a multipurpose square of 1,940 square metres for cultural activities and events. The project also includes a central promenade with shaded areas and spaces for temporary open-air exhibitions, as well as the integration of the four statues from the Puente de Piedra into a plant mosaic inspired by the seasons.
Canarian teams behind the winning design
The proposal was developed by Batlle i Roig Arquitectura alongside the Canarian firms Ic3 Ingenieros Consultores and MPC Arquitectos. The jury highlighted its architectural, landscape and environmental quality, as well as its contextual, historical, identity and civic sensitivity, drawing on the culture of water. Batlle i Roig is a multidisciplinary practice founded in 1981 by Enric Batlle Durany and Joan Roig i Duran, with offices in Barcelona, Madrid and A Coruña, specialising in landscape, architecture and urban design projects.
