Lanzarote Hospitality Student Crowned National Culinary Champion
Gabriel Navarro, a hospitality student from the Zonzamas Vocational Training Centre in Arrecife, Lanzarote, has won the top prize at the fourteenth edition of the Promesas de la Alta Cocina (Promises of Haute Cuisine) competition organised by Le Cordon Bleu Madrid. The contest took place on Tuesday.
A Test of Skill and Creativity
Navarro competed against nine other candidates from different regions of Spain in a demanding four-hour test. The challenge required each contestant to create an original dish from a common base of chicken and lobster, using additional ingredients of their own choice to demonstrate both technical knowledge and creativity. Navarro’s winning entry was titled ‘Harmony Between Sea and Land’.
Prize and Future Prospects
As the winner, Navarro will receive a scholarship valued at €24,000 to study one of the programmes offered by the renowned Le Cordon Bleu culinary school in Madrid. His college, the Zonzamas Vocational Training Centre, will also receive a prize of €1,500 in recognition of its support and dedication to the student’s participation.
Surprise and Gratitude
Upon receiving the award, Navarro expressed his surprise and gratitude. “I didn’t expect it, I thought it wouldn’t be possible,” he stated, thanking his college, his parents, and his classmates for their support. He said the scholarship would help him push his limits and leave his studies as well-prepared as possible for his future career.
Prestigious Judging and Runner-Up
The competition jury was chaired by Paco Roncero, a Madrid-based chef who holds two Michelin stars and three Repsol ‘Suns’. The second-place prize was awarded to Andreu Berenguer from the Batoi Vocational Training Centre in Alicante. He won a €9,000 scholarship for his dish, ‘Royale of Chicken Liver with Confit Lobster Claw’.
