La Palma beach to appear on five million lottery tickets
The Playa de Santa Cruz de La Palma is set to take centre stage on the ONCE daily lottery coupon for Wednesday 2 September. Through this edition, five million tickets will carry an image of this stretch of volcanic black-sand coastline across Spain, as part of the organisation’s ‘Beaches with Blue Flag’ collection.
Official presentation and local pride
The official presentation of the ticket was attended by the director of ONCE in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Miguel Ángel Déniz Méndez; the director of the La Palma Agency, Germán Sánchez Herrera; and the mayor of the island’s capital, Asier Antona. During the event, the mayor highlighted the promotional and symbolic value of the initiative for the municipality: “It is a source of pride that the Playa de Santa Cruz de La Palma should be the image on five million ONCE coupons that will travel the length and breadth of the country. This initiative is a magnificent opportunity to showcase the beauty of our city and continue positioning Santa Cruz de La Palma as an attractive, accessible, quality destination. Each coupon will be an invitation to discover a beach that symbolises the transformation of our capital and its reconnection with the sea.”
A beach reborn
The beach, which reopened in April 2017, stretches 1,200 metres in length and measures 50 metres in width. Its restoration marked a historic recovery for the city, allowing it to regain direct contact with the Atlantic Ocean, a connection lost since 1949 when the Avenida Marítima was built. The beach is equipped with areas for beach volleyball, beach football, watersports and a children’s play area.
Blue Flag recognition and environmental commitment
The summer coupon series ‘Playas con bandera’ launched in 2025 to showcase the two coastal areas in each province that have most frequently been awarded Blue Flag status. The initiative aims to raise awareness of the importance of environmental conservation and sustainability in coastal leisure areas. The Blue Flag distinction is awarded annually by the Association of Environmental and Consumer Education (ADEAC), the Spanish branch of the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE). ADEAC has recognised excellence in water quality, service standards and bather safety since 1984.
