Hotel Evacuated in Costa Teguise After Ventilation Duct Fire

Hotel evacuated as smoke fills upper floors

Firefighters from Lanzarote’s Security and Emergencies Consortium intervened at a hotel in Costa Teguise on Saturday after smoke was reported in the upper part of the building, an incident ultimately traced to a ventilation duct.

Emergency response activated

The emergency call was received at 11:20 am in the Playa del Jablillo area of Teguise municipality. This triggered a level 2 response, mobilising crews from the central fire station with the Bravo 5 vehicle. The intervention took place at the Alexandre Teguise Playa hotel, where grey smoke had been detected at the top of the establishment.

Cause linked to maintenance work

According to information provided by the emergency services, the fire broke out during maintenance work on a building ventilation duct. While using an angle grinder to cut the duct, the system’s suction and an accumulation of lint within the installation caused a combustion, which generated smoke in the area.

Precautionary evacuation and complex operation

Faced with this situation, the hotel management decided to evacuate the building as a precaution. On arrival, firefighters confirmed the smoke’s origin was localised to the ventilation duct and that there was no risk to people. Crews accessed the seventh floor where the affected area was located and applied water and foam to cool the installation and prevent the fire from re-igniting.

The operation was complicated by difficult access to the duct, forcing firefighters to work directly inside the ventilation system. The Consortium stated that at no time was there any danger to people or the rest of the hotel’s facilities, as the incident was confined to the affected duct.

Situation resolved and guests return

Once the area was cooled and the situation under control, firefighters concluded their intervention. They informed the hotel management that guests could return inside the building.
