Gran Canaria approves new institute to manage island museums
Gran Canaria will have an institute for the comprehensive management of the island’s museums after the plenary session of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria approved on Thursday, in an extraordinary sitting, the organic regulations establishing its legal and organisational framework.
The new Instituto de Museos de Gran Canaria will make it possible to organise and coordinate jointly the seven museum centres run by the island council, including the Museo de Bellas Artes (MUBEA), whose opening is scheduled for this December, according to a statement from the island authority.
The seven museums under the new structure
Under the structure of the new institute, the Casa de Colón, the Casa-Museo Pérez Galdós, the Museo y Parque Arqueológico Cueva Pintada, the Casa-Museo Antonio Padrón, the Casa-Museo León y Castillo, the Casa-Museo Tomás Morales and the aforementioned MUBEA will all be administered.
The agreement approved by the island plenary, with the votes in favour of the governing group (NC-PSOE), establishes the legal and organisational framework of Museos de Gran Canaria, a specialised body that will take on the management of the island’s museums with the aim of unifying administrative procedures, coordinating resources and facilitating the planning of activities linked to the conservation, research and promotion of cultural heritage.
In this regard, the president of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, Antonio Morales, said that the creation of the institute represents “an important step towards strengthening and modernising the management of our museum network”.
Conservation, restoration and public engagement
Among the functions of this new management body are the protection, cataloguing, restoration and exhibition of heritage, as well as the promotion of educational, cultural and scientific activities and the establishment of collaborative relationships with other institutions.
The institute will have a board of directors made up of a maximum of nine members, with institutional and technical representation; a presidency and a management team; and a technical council in which the directors of the museums will take part, in order to facilitate their coordination and the drawing up of programming, as well as to identify needs.
New channels for public and scientific participation
The approved regulations also provide for the possibility of setting up municipal collaboration bodies, citizen participation bodies and scientific advisory bodies. They likewise provide for a Citizen Participation Commission, a Municipal Museum Committee and a Scientific Advisory Committee, conceived as spaces for consultation, collaboration and the formulation of proposals.
In this way, and with this new structure, the needs of the seven island museums can be tackled jointly, while maintaining the identity and particular characteristics of each centre and encouraging the coordination of resources earmarked for the conservation, research and promotion of Gran Canaria’s cultural heritage, the Cabildo concludes in its statement.
