gran canaria energy self consumption grants 2026

Gran Canaria Launches €700k Green Energy Grants for Homes & Firms

Gran Canaria Council Approves Major New Green Energy Grants

The council of Gran Canaria, through its Island Energy Council, has approved new grant calls for 2026 aimed at energy self-consumption for homes and businesses, as well as sustainable mobility. The total budget for these initiatives is €700,000. With this measure, the island government is reinforcing its energy transition strategy.

A Qualitative Leap for Domestic Energy Independence

The Councillor for the Environment, Climate, Energy and Knowledge of the Gran Canaria Council, Raúl García Brink, emphasised that these grants enable a qualitative leap in domestic self-consumption. “They make it easier for more and more households to produce their own energy and reduce their external dependence,” he stated. He further underlined that “the energy transition isn’t achieved only with large infrastructure, but from each home. When a family installs solar panels, they are contributing directly to a fairer, more efficient, and more resilient energy model.”

Subsidies for Households: Up to €4,000 Available

The main line of subsidies is directed at the residential sector, with grants that will allow families to install solar energy systems and reduce their electricity bills. Specifically, aid for homes reaches €500 per installed kilowatt, with a maximum of €3,000. This is supplemented by an additional grant for storage systems of €300 per kilowatt hour, with a maximum of €1,000. In this way, each home can receive up to €4,000 per installation.

The grant call also includes participation from homeowners’ associations, provided the installations are destined for the common areas of the building. This opens the door to extending self-consumption in urban environments.

Support for Businesses and Sustainable Transport

Alongside the household scheme, the council has enabled a specific call for businesses and non-profit entities, endowed with €125,000. These grants will finance photovoltaic self-consumption installations linked to economic activity, as well as energy storage systems. In this regard, Raúl García Brink noted that “self-consumption is today a strategic tool for our companies, because it allows them to reduce structural costs and gain competitiveness in a complex energy context.”

The grant calls also include a line of aid for sustainable mobility, aimed at promoting the use of light electric vehicles. The subsidies will cover up to 50% of the purchase cost, with up to €1,000 for electric mopeds, €600 for electric bicycles, €150 for electric scooters, and €1,500 for vehicles adapted for people with reduced mobility.

How and When to Apply

Applications for the grants can be submitted until 31 December 2026 or until the available credit is exhausted, via an online procedure. The councillor concluded, “Gran Canaria is demonstrating that the energy transition is built from the local level, with useful policies close to citizens, which have a real impact on people’s daily lives.”
