canary islands weather thursday calima clears

Thursday: temperatures drop, calima clears

Thursday marks a continuation of the gradual cooling trend across the Canary Islands, but it will still be a hot one. The calima is on its way out, retreating during the day, while strong trade winds and a restless Atlantic keep things lively.

General outlook

Maximum temperatures will still reach 40°C in the south of Gran Canaria and 38°C in the west of La Palma. Elsewhere, expect highs around 34°C. The cooler air will be limited to northern coastal areas.

Wind will blow moderate to strong, with very strong intervals in the usual acceleration zones of the trade winds. At sea, conditions will be rough due to the wind. If you are heading to the beach, the best bet is a sheltered spot on the south coast.

Island-by-island forecast

Tenerife

Temperatures keep easing, but it remains warm. Expect some low cloud on the north coast and plenty of sunshine elsewhere. High-level calima will fade as the day progresses.

Gran Canaria

The “panza de burro” – the characteristic cloud bank – will cover the north and the capital, bringing a muggy feel. Trade winds will be strong, with very strong intervals on the southeast and northwest coasts, where gusts could reach 60 to 80 km/h.

Lanzarote

Low clouds will drift over the north and west, but most of the island will enjoy long sunny spells. Temperatures drop slightly but remain summery. The trade wind will gust up to 70 km/h.

Fuerteventura

Sunshine and clearing calima, with some low cloud over the north of Jandía. Temperatures fall to a range of 28 to 35°C. A moderate northeast wind will blow across the island.

Temperatures drop but the heat persists, with the highest values in the Aridane Valley. A sunny day overall, but the trade wind will blow gusty around El Paso.

La Gomera

Trade winds will be strong, with very strong intervals. Expect sunshine, diminishing calima and warm, summery temperatures.

Apart from low cloud on the far northeast, skies will be clear. Calima is on the decrease. The trade wind will blow moderate to strong.
