Major Teacher Recruitment Drive Launched
The Ministry of Education, Vocational Training, Physical Activity and Sports, led by Poli Suárez, has published the selection procedure for entry into the Teaching Corps. The application window will be open for twenty working days starting from the day after its publication in the Official Bulletin of the Canary Islands, which is scheduled for the middle of next week. This would set the deadline for applications as 24 April.
Breakdown of Available Positions
A total of 686 posts are available, distributed across the following specialities: Early Years Education (110), Foreign Languages – English (91) and French (23), Physical Education (65), Music (37), Therapeutic Pedagogy (120), Audition and Language (25), and Primary Education (215). These positions correspond to public employment offers from 2023 and 2024, with ten percent of the places reserved for applicants with disabilities. Each candidate may only apply for one speciality.
Streamlined Selection Process
The Director General of Personnel and Teacher Training, Mónica Ramírez, explained that the Ministry has “introduced significant improvements in the organisation of the process to facilitate attendance, such as holding the presentation event on all islands.” She added that they are also “incorporating a new structure for the written test, which will take place in two parts on the same day, with the aim of making the process clearer and more orderly for candidates.”
New Exam Format and Island Accessibility
This mandatory presentation event will include the submission of the teaching programme and the communication of instructions for the tests. The written exam will be held in two sessions on the same day: the topic development in the morning, and the practical case study in the afternoon. The latter will subsequently be read out in an individual summons before the examination board. Candidates may apply for one speciality and also request to join the employment lists for another of the advertised specialities.
As a new feature in this teaching recruitment round, Ramírez highlighted that for “the presentation event required to participate in the procedure, applicants will not have to travel from their island of residence, avoiding additional cost.” The Ministry of Education will instead transport the examination boards to all the islands.
Broader Recruitment Campaign
This selection procedure adds to the vacancies already announced, which include 235 posts for various secondary-level vocational training specialities, Plastic Arts and Design, and Singular Vocational Training Sectors, as well as 23 for the Corps of Music and Performing Arts Professors. The preparation of a recruitment call for the Education Inspector Corps is also underway. Ramírez specified that these tests will take place in June and July. The Ministry is working to ensure all these processes are completed within this year.
