British holidaymaker dies after being pulled from the sea in Fuerteventura

A 54-year-old British man has died after being rescued from the sea with signs of drowning at Esquinzo beach, in the municipality of La Oliva, Fuerteventura.

Found unconscious 100 metres from the shore

The man was found unconscious around 100 metres from the coast and, despite the resuscitation attempts carried out by emergency services, he could not be saved. The incident occurred at around 15:32, when several swimmers alerted 112 to the fact that they had pulled an unconscious man from the water roughly 100 metres offshore.

The coordinating nurse at the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC) gave instructions by telephone to those who raised the alarm on how to perform basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation until the medical teams arrived.

Major emergency response

A basic life support ambulance, Primary Care staff from the Corralejo health centre and two medicalised helicopters were dispatched to the scene. On arrival, the medics confirmed that the man showed signs of drowning and was in cardiorespiratory arrest, so they continued with advanced resuscitation efforts, although they ultimately confirmed his death.

Also taking part in the operation were members of the Emergency and Rescue Group (GES), firefighters from La Oliva, beach lifeguards, Local Police and the Civil Guard. The firefighters secured the area to allow the aircraft to land, while the GES helicopter transported the body to the point where Civil Guard officers and the judicial authority were waiting, owing to the difficult access to the beach.
