Binter brings local Canary Island produce to the skies
Binter and GMR Canarias (Gestión del Medio Rural de Canarias) have launched a new initiative this July to promote the consumption of local produce and shine a light on the Canary Islands’ primary sector. The airline has kick-started a collaboration that will run throughout the year, featuring different on-board activities centred around seasonal products, designed to bring “freshness and Canarian essence to many of our flights,” the airline stated in a press release.
Gran Canaria plums take centre stage on seven routes
The first of these actions took place this Tuesday, dedicated to the mid-altitude plums of Gran Canaria, which form part of the island’s Fruit Valorisation Project, promoted by the Cabildo of Gran Canaria and GMR Canarias. For this reason, on seven routes — one to each island served by the airline, plus one to Madrid from Gran Canaria and the return flights — passengers were surprised with a selection of these mid-altitude plums. The initiative allows the airline to bring this locally sourced product to thousands of travellers, showcasing its qualities and the work of local producers.
QR codes offer passengers more information
The activity also included information about the fruit via a QR code, directing passengers to the airline’s on-board communication platform.
Future tastings to feature limes, mandarins, wine, and chestnuts
This marks the starting point of a project that will continue over the coming months with new initiatives dedicated to other representative products of regional agriculture. These include limes and mandarins in September, followed by wine and chestnuts coinciding with the celebration of San Andrés, further highlighting the agri-food wealth of the islands.
Binter strengthens commitment to sustainable development
Through this collaboration, Binter reinforces its commitment to the sustainable development of the Canary Islands, supporting initiatives that help strengthen the local economic fabric and bring locally sourced products closer to residents and visitors alike. “The company understands that connectivity is not just about linking territories, but also about generating opportunities for the sectors that form part of the archipelago’s identity, helping the value of what is produced in the islands reach more and more people and showcasing the riches of our islands,” emphasised Binter.
