Canary Islands back among Spain’s tourism elite
The Canary Islands have once again taken their place among Spain’s most prominent tourist destinations. The archipelago has secured seven accolades at the 2026 World Travel Awards, regarded as the Oscars of Tourism, thanks to the offering of six establishments located in Tenerife and Gran Canaria. The recognitions span everything from luxury holiday complexes and beach hotels to family-friendly facilities, all-inclusive experiences and conference tourism.
Tenerife leads the way with four awards
Tenerife accounts for four of the seven prizes, with a particularly strong showing from Las Terrazas de Abama Suites in Guía de Isora, which has picked up a double recognition. The establishment has been named Best Resort in Spain for 2026, one of the competition’s main national awards. It also takes the prize for Best Hotel Suite in Spain, awarded to its four-bedroom accommodation with ocean views.
The island of Mount Teide has also stood out in the high-end holiday segment. Bahía del Duque, in Costa Adeje, has been chosen as Best Beach Resort in Spain, a recognition that reinforces its position within the country’s luxury hotel offering. Joining these prizes is the award won by Royal Hideaway Corales Villas, also in Tenerife, which came out on top in the category of Best Luxury Hotel Villa in Spain. The gong went specifically to its three-bedroom villa suite with sea views and a private pool.
Gran Canaria adds three more accolades
Gran Canaria, for its part, has added another three recognitions in categories linked to different visitor profiles. Paradisus by Meliá Gran Canaria has won the prize for Best All-Inclusive Resort in Spain, while the Lopesan Baobab Resort, in Meloneras, has been distinguished as the country’s Best Family Resort. The Gran Canarian representation is completed by Santa Catalina, a Royal Hideaway Hotel, in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, which has received the award for Best Conference Hotel in Spain. This recognition shines a spotlight on a segment different from traditional sun-and-sea tourism: that of business travel, corporate meetings and conferences.
A showcase of the archipelago’s diverse accommodation
The seven accolades obtained by establishments on both islands reflect the diversity of the archipelago’s accommodation offering, with a presence in categories ranging from family holidays to exclusive services and business tourism. The prizes collected by the Canary Islands form part of a strong showing by Spanish establishments and companies in the 2026 World Travel Awards roll of honour.
Spanish success across the board
In the main accommodation category, Asia Gardens Hotel & Thai Spa, in Finestrat (Alicante), has been named Best Hotel in Spain, while Four Seasons Resort Mallorca at Formentor, in Pollença, has taken the recognition for Best Luxury Resort in the country. Madrid has also occupied a prominent place. Mandarín Oriental Ritz has been distinguished as Best Luxury Hotel in Spain and Gran Hotel Inglés has claimed the prize for Best Luxury Boutique Hotel. In Catalonia, Miiro Borneta has won the award for Best Urban Hotel in Spain, while Majestic Hotel & Spa Barcelona has achieved a double recognition, triumphing as Best Luxury Hotel and Spa both in Spain and in Europe.
The awards have also recognised companies linked to tourist services, mobility and travel management. Among them are Sixt, in car rental; eDreams, as Best Online Travel Agency; Viajes El Corte Inglés, as Best Travel Agency; Totally Spain, as Best Tour Operator; Cititravel DMC, in destination management; and BCD Travel Spain, in corporate travel management. In this way, the Spanish tourism sector has once again achieved a broad representation in these international awards, with the Canary Islands among the leading territories thanks to the seven prizes obtained by its hotel establishments.
