Bus lane to Las Teresitas returns this weekend
Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council announced on Thursday that it will reactivate the bus lane to Las Teresitas beach this Saturday and Sunday, from 09:00 to 18:00, in order to make it easier for residents to reach the beach amid forecasts of high temperatures.
This is the second time the measure has been brought in this year, following the trial run during the first weekend of August, which was well received by beachgoers.
Chronic congestion at the island’s busiest urban beach
It should be noted, however, that as the municipality’s main beach, Las Teresitas suffers serious traffic jams on its approach roads. The problems date back to the COVID-19 pandemic, when the council decided to remove a large number of the parking spaces in the area, close access to one of the lanes used by vehicles (the so-called “lane zero”, the one closest to the sand) and change traffic flow on the Avenida Marítima de San Andrés.
This has led to longer queues whenever a car wants to park, as the only remaining lane comes to a standstill – particularly on the busiest days, when tailbacks can reach the San Andrés motorway and the fishing harbour.
High temperatures trigger the protocol
The city council says the introduction of the bus lane next weekend follows the activation of the protocol by the Local Administration Operational Coordination Centre (Cecopal) after forecasts of high temperatures in the coming days and a large influx of people heading to Las Teresitas.
According to the council, the measure improves transport conditions to the beach, both in terms of journey time and safety, by increasing the number of articulated guagua services on route 910. The bus lane also guarantees travel for residents of both San Andrés and Anaga.
How the bus lane will operate
The bus lane will be activated from the Dársena Pesquera roundabout, joining the San Andrés motorway (TF-11) and continuing to the end of the Avenida Marítima de San Andrés, giving priority to buses.
The council also reminds anyone planning to visit the beach that they can check the real-time occupancy of the parking spaces nearby via the information panels installed for that purpose at various points across the city.
