La Laja natural pools reopen to swimmers in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria
The city council of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria reopened the natural pools at La Laja beach to swimmers this Tuesday, following the completion of dredging, cleaning and sanitisation work on the seabed, along with the removal of a total of 830 cubic metres of sand that had accumulated in the pools.
Work finishes two weeks ahead of schedule
According to a council statement, the operation concluded two weeks before the deadline set after the most recent rescheduling of the works. This followed an unavoidable technical pause at the start of the month caused by the natural cycle of the September tides, which forced dredging to be halted and had pushed the expected completion date back to 5 October.
Pedro Quevedo, the councillor responsible for Ciudad del Mar, welcomed the completion of the works and praised the coordinated effort of the technical team: “The phased planning and the efficiency of the operation have allowed us not only to restore the full functionality and cleanliness of the natural pools, but to do so two weeks ahead of the planned schedule. We are extremely grateful for the understanding and cooperation of residents and users during these weeks of work, which were essential to guaranteeing the quality and safety of this iconic space in the Cono Sur area.”
Investment and environmental approach
The project, carried out by specialist firm Bluematt Ingeniería Subacuática SL at a municipal investment of €130,177.57, involved refurbishing the north pool, the central pool and the children’s pool to the south.
In line with the environmental sustainability criteria established from the outset of the project, all sand extracted from the seabed was deposited at the northern end of the beach, ensuring that the sediment remains within the ecological system of the coastal environment.
Fully operational for public use
With the formal reopening carried out this Tuesday, the La Laja natural pool complex is now fully refurbished and operating at full capacity for public use, with complete guarantees of safety and water quality.
