Lanzarote hospital leads the way with pioneering fibroid treatment
The Doctor José Molina Orosa University Hospital in Lanzarote has become the first in the Canary Islands to offer microwave ablation of uterine fibroids, an innovative technique that treats the condition through a minimally invasive procedure instead of conventional surgery. The Canary Islands Government’s Department of Health announced the development this Friday, explaining that the hospital’s Gynaecology and Obstetrics department has added a new therapeutic option that broadens the treatments previously available to patients.
Three successful procedures so far
Specialists in the department have successfully carried out three procedures on patients, with satisfactory results, reducing the size of the fibroids and improving the associated symptoms. Microwave ablation is a minimally invasive medical technique that uses microwave energy to apply heat directly to the fibroid, destroying its cells in a controlled way. It is indicated for women of reproductive age who experience heavy bleeding and secondary infertility associated with fibroids, following an initial assessment by a specialist.
A significant step forward in treatment
Javier Cuadrado, head of the department, noted that the procedure represents a significant advance, as it makes it possible to treat certain fibroids for which other treatments are less effective. The technique is performed without surgical incisions, promoting a swift recovery and reducing the potential complications associated with traditional surgery. In this way, Molina Orosa Hospital is making progress in conservative treatments for uterine fibroids and reaffirming its commitment to innovation, personalised medicine and continuous improvement in women’s healthcare.
Growing gynaecology department
The introduction of new techniques and therapeutic resources forms part of the growth and consolidation of the Gynaecology and Obstetrics department in recent years. The Molina Orosa service currently has 19 specialists, the highest figure recorded to date, along with 11 nursing care technicians. Finally, the Department of Health noted that three doctors and three nursing technicians have been added compared with the 2023 staffing levels, allowing the hospital to expand its care capacity and respond comprehensively to the ever-growing demand for specialised women’s health care.
