Twelve earthquakes recorded across the Canary Islands in two days

The Instituto Geográfico Nacional (IGN) has recorded up to 12 earthquakes over the past two days with a magnitude of 0.5 or above, or which were felt by the population. Seven of those tremors occurred on Sunday 13th, including the two strongest of the two-day period, measuring magnitude 2.3 and 2.2. The first struck in the Atlantic at 05:42 at a depth of 20 kilometres, while the second was recorded north-west of Gáldar at 08:12, also at a depth of 20 kilometres. The remaining earthquakes of the day took place in Icod de los Vinos, Guía de Isora and out in the ocean, between 01:32 and 16:26, with magnitudes ranging from 0.7 to 1.8.

Saturday’s tremors and their locations

As for the earthquakes registered on Saturday, these occurred between 01:38 and 06:26. They ranged in magnitude from 1.3 to 2, at depths of between 4 and 25 kilometres. In chronological order, they were recorded in Tazacorte, Agaete, Frontera, San Miguel de Abona and the Atlantic.

How to stay safe during an earthquake

Although the tremors that occur in the islands are not usually particularly strong, it is never a bad idea to be prepared and to know how to act in a situation of this kind. To that end, the IGN offers a series of tips on what we should do during an earthquake:

  • Drop, take cover under a table and hold on to it
  • As far as possible, stay calm and keep your balance
  • Inside a home, move away from furniture, windows and lamps
  • Outdoors, move away from buildings, walls and electricity poles
  • If you are driving, stop in a safe place, switch on your hazard lights and stay inside the vehicle
  • If you use a wheelchair, brake in a safe place and protect your head with your arms
  • If you are in a place with large crowds, protect your head with your arms and take shelter under seats and tables
