British family falls ill at Fuerteventura resort

Ten members of the same British family say they suffered a severe gastrointestinal illness during a holiday at a tourist complex in Jandía, Fuerteventura, according to the British law firm Irwin Mitchell, which represents them. The group of eleven people from West Yorkshire spent two weeks on an all-inclusive basis on the island during July and August 2025. According to the firm, ten of them fell ill a few days after arriving and four are still suffering from after-effects months later.

A birthday trip that turned into illness

The family had travelled to Fuerteventura to celebrate Joyce Arandall’s 60th birthday. However, several members began to suffer vomiting, diarrhoea, severe abdominal pain, nausea and intense fatigue just days after settling into the complex. Rachel and Andrew Constable say they fell ill on 24 July, after dining at the establishment’s restaurant. Joyce Arandall began to show symptoms three days later. The firm maintains that some of those affected continued to experience discomfort for the rest of the trip and that several are still dealing with health problems.

Claims of dirty bedding, cockroaches and raw chicken

In the accounts provided by Irwin Mitchell, those affected describe alleged shortcomings in both the rooms and the dining area. Among other issues, they claim to have found dirty bed linen and towels, cockroaches in some rooms and debris floating in the pool. They also say that cold food, products still frozen inside and even raw chicken were served in the restaurant. These claims form part of the guests’ account and of the investigation opened by their lawyers.

Links to a previous death at the same complex

The new case takes on particular significance because of an earlier incident at the same tourist complex. Irwin Mitchell also represents four other British tourists who fell ill after staying there in 2024, among them the widow of Leslie Green, aged 70. Green and his wife arrived at the establishment on 1 October 2024. He fell ill days later, was admitted to a hospital in Fuerteventura and died on 4 November. An inquest held in the United Kingdom in 2025 concluded that he died as a result of an illness contracted after eating partially cooked chicken.

Legal action against Jet2holidays

Irwin Mitchell has announced that it will take legal action on behalf of the family against Jet2holidays, the operator with which the trip was booked. Solicitor Jennifer Hodgson says the accounts received show similarities with other complaints relating to the same accommodation and believes it is necessary to establish whether a pattern exists. The firm has also asked anyone else who has suffered health problems after staying at the establishment to get in touch to strengthen the investigation. So far, the information provided does not include a response from the tourist complex to these new allegations.
