Canary Islands surpass one million visitors in July

The Canary Islands once again surpassed the one million visitor mark in July. The archipelago received 1,058,995 visitors, a 5% increase compared with the same month last year, according to the latest figures published this Friday by the National Statistics Institute (INE).

Growth in tourist numbers, however, was slightly higher than the increase recorded in overnight stays, which reached 6,781,369 nights, up 2.39% year-on-year. The figures confirm the strength of tourist activity in the islands during one of the months traditionally associated with the summer season.

A year ago, the Canary Islands had recorded 1,008,030 travellers, meaning that in July this year 50,965 more people chose the archipelago as their destination. Of the total number of visitors, 748,524 came from abroad, compared with 310,471 residents of Spain. International tourism thus continues to play a decisive role in the islands’ accommodation activity.

Province-by-province breakdown

By province, Las Palmas welcomed 623,192 travellers during July, up 4.66% on a year earlier. In Santa Cruz de Tenerife, 435,803 visitors were registered, representing a year-on-year increase of 5.63%.

The average length of stay across the archipelago stood at 6.4 days, although the differences between the two provinces were notable. Travellers remained an average of 6.82 days in Las Palmas, compared with 5.8 days in Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

Occupancy rates across the islands

Beyond the volume of arrivals, the INE data also reveals significant differences in occupancy levels at the islands’ main tourist destinations. Among the areas with the highest occupancy during July, the south of Gran Canaria stands out, where 82.91% of available bed spaces were occupied. In the case of rooms, the percentage was even higher, reaching 85.91%. The average length of stay in this area stood at 7.04 days.

Lanzarote also exceeded the 80% threshold, with occupancy of 80.92% of bed spaces and 82.92% of rooms. Travellers remained on the island for an average of 7.1 days. Gran Canaria likewise ranked among the archipelago’s areas with the highest occupancy levels during the month.

Tenerife among Spain’s leading destinations

In terms of overnight stays, Tenerife features among the country’s major tourist destinations. The island accumulated nearly 1.4 million nights during July, counting both those corresponding to Spanish residents and foreign travellers. Much of this activity was concentrated in the southern tourist zone.

Municipal hotspots

Municipal data offers an even clearer picture of where tourist activity was concentrated. San Bartolomé de Tirajana, in Gran Canaria, headed the list of Canary Islands tourist spots with the most overnight stays, with just over 1.2 million nights recorded during July. It was followed by Adeje, in Tenerife, which exceeded one million overnight stays. The third major tourist hub on the list was Pájara, in Fuerteventura, with more than 730,000 nights.

The July balance sheet therefore leaves a picture of growth for Canary Islands tourism: more than one million travellers, almost 6.8 million overnight stays, and several of the archipelago’s main destinations with occupancy levels above 80%.
