canary islands weather wednesday august 5

Wednesday: Cooler, but strong winds and heat remain

A cooler trend, but not for long

The heatwave is starting to loosen its grip. Temperatures across the Canary Islands will begin to drop this Wednesday, a gradual but noticeable shift that will continue into Thursday. However, it is still very warm. Expect maximums of 34–36ºC in the south of the western islands and Fuerteventura, and a sweltering 37–39ºC in the south of Gran Canaria.

General conditions: Sun, wind, and calima

It will be a day of long sunny spells. The calima (Saharan dust) will be present in the atmosphere but is expected to diminish. Some low clouds will linger below 500–600 metres early and late in the day on the highest islands, as well as on Lanzarote and La Graciosa.

The trade winds will blow moderately to strongly from the northeast. Expect very strong intervals in the usual acceleration zones, with gusts of 70–90 km/h, and locally higher on La Gomera.

The Atlantic will be rough. There will be strong swells offshore with force 7 conditions in some areas, and a combined northeasterly swell of 1 to 2 metres. If you are heading to the beach, the sheltered southern coasts are your best bet.

Island-by-island forecast

Tenerife

Still hot, despite the slight drop in temperatures. Anaga will see the most relief, but the eastern, southern, and western midlands could still hit 35–36ºC. Expect some low clouds in the north, sunshine elsewhere, and the calima slowly clearing.

Gran Canaria

The famous “panza de burro” (sea of clouds) returns to the north and the capital, bringing a muggy feel. Temperatures drop, but the south stays scorching with maximums of 36–39ºC. The trade wind will be very strong on the southeast and northwest coasts, with gusts of 60–80 km/h.

Lanzarote

Scattered low clouds in the north and west, but plenty of sunshine elsewhere. Temperatures will fall slightly, remaining summery. A gusty trade wind is expected, with speeds up to 70 km/h.

Fuerteventura

Sunny with calima fading. A few low clouds will appear in the north of Jandía. Temperatures are on the way down, with values between 28 and 34ºC. The wind will be moderate to strong from the northeast.

La Palma

Still warm, but a little cooler than recent days, with maximums of 34–37ºC. Mostly sunny, apart from a few morning clouds. The trade wind will be gusty, especially around El Paso.

La Gomera

Brace for strong winds. The trade wind will bring very strong intervals to the northwest, southeast, and southern midlands, with gusts of 80–110 km/h. It will be sunny, with the calima easing and warm temperatures persisting.

El Hierro

Mostly clear skies with some low clouds in the far northeast. Temperatures will drop, but still reach 32–36ºC. Expect a gusty trade wind.

La Graciosa

Cloudy intervals will dominate, with the most compact cloud cover early and late in the day. Temperatures will be slightly milder, with a moderate to strong northeast wind.
