New fast ferry Mercedes Pinto connects the Canary Islands

A new era for inter-island travel

Travelling between islands is a daily reality in the archipelago, and Baleària Canarias is aiming to make that mobility more sustainable, comfortable and efficient. The company has added the brand-new Mercedes Pinto fast ferry to its fleet. This state-of-the-art vessel now connects Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Morro Jable in Fuerteventura on a daily basis, combining speed, eco-efficiency and an upgraded service standard for both residents and tourists.

128-million-euro investment in green technology

The ship, which represents an investment of 128 million euros and has recently joined the company’s fleet, is equipped with dual engines ready to run on natural gas and biogas. These cleaner fuels help reduce the carbon footprint and position Baleària as a pioneer in their application to maritime transport. Measuring 123 metres in length, with capacity for 1,200 passengers and 425 vehicles, and a top speed of 35 knots, the Mercedes Pinto combines high-speed performance, efficiency and sustainability to offer a more competitive service between the islands.

Onboard comfort and digital services

The Mercedes Pinto features spacious, light-filled interiors, digital services and a variety of seating options. During the crossing, passengers can enjoy the cafeteria, shop, wifi connection and the free Smart B digital content platform, as well as travelling in reclining seats. The VIP lounge, located at the bow, offers more comfortable seating, an exclusive-access cafeteria and panoramic windows. The fast ferry also boasts an outdoor terrace, a children’s area and pet-friendly spaces equipped with a video surveillance system that allows owners to check on their animals via their mobile phones during the voyage.

Premium accommodation and accessibility

Onboard facilities also include a lift, escalators and a stabilisation system designed to improve comfort while sailing. The ship has four Exclusive lounges, each seating six to eight people, which can be reserved for private use by a single group. These spaces feature armchairs, a sofa with a central table, smart TV, minibar and private bathroom. This accommodation option also includes internet access, access to the food and drink service, and priority boarding and disembarkation.

Strengthening the workforce

Alongside its commitment to improving inter-island and mainland connections with new vessels and enhancements to timetables and routes, Baleària Canarias has reinforced its staffing structure. The company has taken on nearly a hundred new professionals across its offices and ships operating in the archipelago, and other recruitment processes remain open to continue strengthening its teams and consolidating its standards of quality, safety and excellence.

A name with cultural significance

The ship’s name also carries a symbolic link to the Canary Islands. Mercedes Pinto, a writer, poet and educator born in San Cristóbal de La Laguna, was a prominent 20th-century figure and a pioneering voice in the defence of civil rights. With this choice, the shipping company continues its tradition of naming part of its fleet after women who have made their mark in the cultural and scientific spheres.
